New version of PernixData FVP 3.1 has been enhanced with a new product called Architet, a solution that gives you information to build your data center.
Architect uses real-time descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics for optimal storage and VM design showing the VM that needs and worth to be accelerated. Architect comes with a separate license that doesn’t affect existing FVP license and can be installed as standalone platform.
Deploying Architect with PernixData FVP software you get more functionality. In addition to providing design recommendations, you have an integrated platform for executing them.
Compared with traditional data center management tools where they do very little to identify why the problem is happening and what to do to fix it, PernixData Architect can address the issue and, in addition to descriptive analytics, it provides a prescriptive and predictive analytics for optimum design recommendations:
- Descriptive Analytics – Identify and profile the top 10 VMs on latency, throughput and IOPS.
- Predictive Analytics – Calculate server-side resources needed to run a VM in Write Through versus Write Back mode, ensuring optimal hardware is allocated before a problem arises.
- Prescriptive Analytics – Recommend ideal server-side resources based on application patterns.
From PernixData Portal download the required software:
- FVP Management Server (includes both FVP and Architect)
- FVP Host Extension
Upgrade FVP Host Extension
First component to upgrade is the FVP Host Extension installed in the ESXi hosts members of the FVP cluster.
There are two options to upgrade the hosts:
- Manual upgrade – a detailed procedure can be found in this post.
- Using VMware Update Manager (VUM) – check out this article to setup the FVP Host Extension for VUM.
Upgrade PernixData Management Server
Once hosts have been upgraded, the FVP Management Server can be installed running installer. If an existing version of FVP software is installed in the system, the Wizard will perform an upgrade process. Click Yes to proceed.
Click Next to begin the installation.
Accept the EULA then click Next.
Existing FVP license won’t be removed from the system. Click Next to continue.
Click Next to complete the installation.
If the VM you are installing FVP Management Server doesn’t meet the requirements (8GB of RAM, at least 4 vCPUs), you may receive the warning as shown in the picture. Click OK to continue.
FVP Management Server is being installed.
When the installation has completed successfully, click Finish to exit the Wizard.
Open your favorite browser to access the FVP Console and type the following address:
Enter the vCenter Server credentials then click Login.
Enter the license
To use Architect, a valid license must be entered. Select the Licensing tab and under PernixData Architect section click + Enter Architect License Key to enter the license.
In the License Key window, enter the license received from PernixData then click OK.
Select the vSphere cluster to monitor then click OK.
Architect is now licensed.
You have now to wait about eight hours to allow Architect to collect data and analyze them.
From the web console, click PernixData Hub and select Architect option.
Main screen (Dashboard) displays an Overview of the configured vSphere cluster.
In the Workload tab you have an overview of how VMs are currently working.
The Insight tab gives you statistics about Insight Acceleration.
VM Performance Plot is a very useful feature that shows machines with performance problems that go beyond the average.
The Working Set Estimation tab refers to the amount of resources that are actively required by an application. This info is used to properly size the FVP resources.
vSphere Cluster analytics
Click on Infrastructure menu item and select the vSphere cluster to analyze.
Architect displays a Summary of selected vSphere cluster.
The Reporting tab serves an in-depth analysis of what’s happening with VMs.
Architect gives you the info to optimize storage performance for new traffic characteristics.
Intelligence is a very cool features that provides the administrators the workload trend and recommendations to better figure out how to design the data center.
In General > Working Set Estimation section estimates are updated every eight hours and it displays the workload trend in the environment.
Selecting Virtual Machines, you can also analyze the traffic generated by VMs.
Very interesting the feature in General > Recommendation tab where the application analyzes the VM workload and gives suggestions to optimize performance.
PernixData Architect is a software solution that provides robust real-time analytics and design recommendations to properly design a data center optimizing the storage infrastructure.
The software is available as 30-day trial to evaluate features and functionality.
