As first troubleshooting step, it\u2019s necessary to <strong>figure out if the problem is related<\/strong> to PernixData or VMware side.<\/p>\n<p>If a SSD drive is installed in the ESXi host, it can be used as flash device for the FVP Cluster but it has some requirements:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FVP requires exclusive access to each flash device.<\/li>\n<li>SSD flash devices perform best with FVP when directly accessed without RAID configuration.<\/li>\n<li>Flash devices must be clear of existing partitions before they can be added to a Flash Cluster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Adding flash devices to cluster<\/h2>\n<p>With the vSphere Web Client, access the vCenter Server. Go to <strong>vCenter Home<\/strong> tab and under <strong>PernixData FVP<\/strong> click on <strong>Flash Clusters<\/strong> item.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd02.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd02\" width=\"514\" height=\"614\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the FVP Cluster to configure, navigate to <strong>Manage<\/strong> tab<strong> &gt; Flash Devices<\/strong> and click on <strong>Add Devices<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd03.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd03\" width=\"600\" height=\"239\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The devices list appears empty. Even enabling the\u00a0<strong>Show all devices<\/strong> option, no resources are available to use.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd04.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd04\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the detected SSD disk (Local ATA Disk), it reports that <strong>Contains VMFS partition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the reason why the SSD can\u2019t be added to Flash Cluster: FVP to properly work requires that flash devices are <strong>clear of existing partitions<\/strong>. Existing partitions must be then removed to fix this matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Procedure<\/h2>\n<p>Enable <strong>SSH<\/strong> in the affected ESXi and login as root.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd05.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd05\" width=\"600\" height=\"185\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In VMware ESXi 5.5,<strong> partedUtil<\/strong> is the tool used to <strong>manage partitions<\/strong> (<em>fdisk<\/em> command is deprecated since it does not handle GPT partitions).<\/p>\n<p>To obtain a list of disk device names that can be managed by <em>partedUtil<\/em> run the command:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># ls \/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd06.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd06\" width=\"600\" height=\"356\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The disk named \u201c<em>t10.ATA_____TS256GSSD320___<\/em> \u2026\u201d is the SSD disk we want to claim.<\/p>\n<p>To get the <strong>partitions list<\/strong> from the installed disks, type the command:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>partedUtil getptbl \"\/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/DeviceName\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># partedUtil getptbl \"\/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/t10.ATA_____TS256GSSD320_______<br \/>\n_____________________B427990008__________\" <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd07.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd07\" width=\"600\" height=\"84\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this example no partitions are detected. If the disk <strong>contains partitions<\/strong>, remove them using the <em>partedUtil<\/em> command.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>partedUtil delete \"\/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/DeviceName\" PartitionNumber<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because no partitions are configured, try <strong>fixing the GPT table<\/strong> running the command:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>partedUtil fix \"\/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/DeviceName\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># partedUtil fix \"\/vmfs\/devices\/disks\/t10.ATA_____TS256GSSD320___________<br \/>\n_________________B427990008__________\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd08.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd08\" width=\"600\" height=\"49\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reboot<\/strong> the ESXi host from the console with the command <em>reboot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># reboot<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd09.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd09\" width=\"600\" height=\"37\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat <strong>same steps<\/strong> for all the hosts with SSD to claim.<\/p>\n<p>Once the host has rebooted, in the FVP Cluster configuration tab the <strong>SSD disks are now listed<\/strong> when clicking <strong>Add Devices<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd10.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd10\" width=\"600\" height=\"408\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The flash devices are now <strong>successfully added<\/strong> to the FVP Cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"fvpaddssd11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/fvpaddssd11.jpg\" alt=\"fvpaddssd11\" width=\"600\" height=\"161\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Be careful\u00a0when <strong>re-using SSD devices<\/strong> to set new configurations since they have to be cleared from existing partitions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"firma\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the configuration process of the PernixData FVP Cluster, you are unable to add SSD due to unlisted devices.
