At first glance you can recognize some<strong> little differences<\/strong> compared to previous version.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version02.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version02\" width=\"600\" height=\"488\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Flash Cluster is now called <strong>FVP Cluster<\/strong> because also RAM is now supported in addition to SSD and cards flash devices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version03.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version03\" width=\"320\" height=\"99\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Resources<\/strong> tab you can find resources referred as <strong>both flash and RAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version04.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version04\" width=\"464\" height=\"165\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Performance Summary<\/strong> there is a new <strong>FVP Network Saving<\/strong>\u00a0item\u00a0that reflect the bandwidth saving as result of the Adaptive Network Compression.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version05.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version05\" width=\"320\" height=\"373\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>NFS datastores support<\/h2>\n<p>In version 2.0 NFS datastores are now fully supported. During the cluster creation, the datastores or VMs to accelerate can be added navigating to <strong>Datastores\/VMs<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version06.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version06\" width=\"478\" height=\"198\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clicking on <strong>Add Datastores<\/strong> button, all datastores available in the vSphere cluster that can be used in the\u00a0acceleration are shown. In the available list <strong>also NFS datastores<\/strong> are now showing up and can be accelerated in <em>Write Through<\/em> and <em>Write Back<\/em> with replication.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version07.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version07\" width=\"600\" height=\"405\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the accelerated NFS datastores, nothing change from the operational prospective and everything remains the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>RAM support<\/h2>\n<p>The first new feature of release 2.0, in addition to SSD and flash card devices, also <strong>available RAM<\/strong> is now shown in the list and can be used as acceleration resource.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version08.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version08\" width=\"600\" height=\"516\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can take the <strong>RAM available in the selected host<\/strong> and use it for the FVP Cluster. RAM and SSD flash devices <strong>cannot be added <\/strong>from the same host.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version09.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version09\" width=\"600\" height=\"408\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When selecting RAM you have to specify the amount to use for acceleration. The minimum amount of RAM you can add to an FVP Cluster is <strong>4 GB per server<\/strong> and max amount is <strong>1 TB per server<\/strong>. RAM must be added in <strong>multiple of 4 GB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version10.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version10\" width=\"353\" height=\"301\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When RAM is used, there are some key points to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is not required that <strong>every host participates<\/strong> in terms of resources in the FVP Cluster.<\/li>\n<li>It is not required that all hosts provide <strong>same amount of RAM<\/strong> in the cluster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To change the <strong>amount of RAM<\/strong> for acceleration, from <strong>Manage &gt; Acceleration Resources<\/strong> tab select the host then click <strong>Edit<\/strong>. Change the value to fit your needs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version11.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version11\" width=\"600\" height=\"466\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All functionalities in version 1.5 are now <strong>supported also with RAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>RAM vs Write Back policy<\/h4>\n<p>While in the <em>Write Back<\/em> mode, the VMs leverage the RAM on the <strong>host in which they are running<\/strong> for their acceleration. All I\/O Reads and Writes recall the RAM of the host in which they are running.<\/p>\n<p>All writes are replicated to RAM on another host as part of the <strong>Write Back + 1 settings<\/strong> enabled.<\/p>\n<p>When the VM uses the environment to vMotion from one host to another, it accesses the RAM on the host it was previously running on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Fault Domains<\/h2>\n<p>Fault Domains is another new feature introduced in this new release and allows the administrators to align their FVP Cluster design with the Datacenters design. It\u2019s useful to <strong>control where the replica lands<\/strong> when <em>Write Back<\/em> mode is used.<\/p>\n<p>With Fault Domains it is possible to<strong> logically partition<\/strong> the hosts in vSphere cluster in two different Fault Domains.<\/p>\n<p>If the <em>Write Back<\/em> policy is set, when a datastore is added to the FVP Cluster in previous release you were requested the number of replications you want to use (0,1,2). Now you are asked <strong>which Fault Domain<\/strong> you want the Peer to be.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version12.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version12\" width=\"600\" height=\"421\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Create a Fault Domain<\/h4>\n<p>In the <strong>Fault Domains<\/strong> tab, by default the hosts configured in the FVP Cluster are identified under <strong>Default Fault Domain<\/strong> item.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version13.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version13\" width=\"462\" height=\"440\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the Fault Domain configuration, you can <strong>add hosts in any order<\/strong> and control where the replica lands when VMs run in any host in Fault Domain. To create a new Fault Domain click on <strong>Add Fault Domain<\/strong> button and type a <strong>Name<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version14\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version14.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version14\" width=\"600\" height=\"478\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To <strong>logically partition<\/strong> the host click a Fault Domain just created and click on <strong>Add Host<\/strong> button. Select a host from the list and click <strong>OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version15.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version15\" width=\"600\" height=\"515\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat <strong>same procedure<\/strong> to create additional Fault Domains.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version16\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version16.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version16\" width=\"600\" height=\"215\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Associate Fault Domains<\/h4>\n<p>Select a Fault Domain previously created then click<strong> Edit Association<\/strong>. The other available Fault Domains are shown in the <strong>Edit Associations<\/strong> window. Select an available Fault Domain (i.e. <em>fault02<\/em>) then click <strong>OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version17\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version17.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version17\" width=\"600\" height=\"495\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do the same for the <em>fault02<\/em> Fault Domain. The result is that VMs running in <em>fault01<\/em> host will have the <strong>replica landing<\/strong> in <em>fault02<\/em> Fault Domain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp20version18\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/pernixdatafvp20version18.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version18\" width=\"600\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If due to <strong>DRS or custom rules<\/strong> the VMs move to different hosts in <em>fault01<\/em> or <em>fault02<\/em>, the replication is <strong>automatically changed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Adaptive Network Compression<\/h2>\n<p>Last\u00a0new feature of FVP 2.0 is the Adaptive Network Compression. In case of network bandwidth constrain, especially in 1 GB environments when <em>Write Back<\/em> mode is used, the <strong>latency of replication<\/strong> to remote resources sometimes impacts the VMs performances.<\/p>\n<p>The compression occurs in this step before pushing the data over the network to make another copy: data are <strong>shipped in compressed mode<\/strong> to remote resources.<\/p>\n<p>Cost of compression in terms of CPU workload is around 2% and it shouldn\u2019t be a bottleneck and this new feature is<strong> enabled for 1 GB environments<\/strong> because in 10 GB environments doesn't bring real benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FVP is smart enough to understand<\/strong> if 10GB switching environment is used and then the compression is not enabled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Licensing<\/h2>\n<p>Four editions are available to accommodate any data center\u00a0environment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10592\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/pernixdatafvp20version19.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp20version19\" width=\"600\" height=\"549\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>PernixData FVP confirmed to be a solution to keep in mind if you are experiencing I\/O constrains in your shared storage.
