{"id":10645,"date":"2014-10-22T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T08:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=10645"},"modified":"2023-07-16T11:22:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-16T09:22:03","slug":"vsphere-5-x-vms-migrated-enabling-esxi-maintenance-mode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vsphere-5-x-vms-migrated-enabling-esxi-maintenance-mode\/","title":{"rendered":"vSphere 5.x VMs not migrated enabling ESXi maintenance mode"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated01.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the ESXi is being put in Maintenance Mode, the VMs are not migrated automatically to other hosts within the cluster.<\/p>\n<p>The reason of this behavior is often due to the <strong>vSphere HA Admission Control<\/strong> feature that prevents VMs to be moved to the host that doesn't have enough resources to ensure failover capacity within the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Procedure<\/h2>\n<p>To put the host in Maintenance Mode for maintenance, right click the ESXi and select the <strong>Enter Maintenance Mode<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated02.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated02\" width=\"437\" height=\"304\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You may receive a warning message that prevent the host to complete the procedure. To complete the process you need to <strong>manually migrate<\/strong> the VMs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated03.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated03\" width=\"361\" height=\"165\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To automate the migration process, you need to disable the <strong>vSphere HA Admission Control<\/strong>. Click <strong>Edit<\/strong> button to disable the <strong>Admission Control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated04.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated04\" width=\"600\" height=\"317\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Disable the <strong>Enable Admission Control<\/strong> option then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated05.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated05\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Check the Admission Control has been disabled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated06.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated06\" width=\"600\" height=\"244\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Try putting the host in Maintenance Mode again. The VMs are <strong>now automatically migrated<\/strong> to other hosts of the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated07.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated07\" width=\"202\" height=\"288\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The host is now in Maintenance mode.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"vmnotmigrated08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vmnotmigrated08.jpg\" alt=\"vmnotmigrated08\" width=\"266\" height=\"304\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This policy change allows the system to <strong>automatically migrates the VMs<\/strong> during the ESXi Maintenance Mode request.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"firma\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the ESXi is being put in Maintenance Mode, the VMs are not migrated automatically to other hosts within the cluster.
