After completing the installation, backup tasks have to be configured in Trilead VM Explorer in order to protect the environment.<\/p>\n

The configuration takes little time and it is pretty easy. No doubt the ease of use is the strength of this product.<\/p>\n

Configure a backup task<\/h2>\n

To create a backup task\u00a0two ways can be used: manual and scheduled.<\/p>\n

Manual backup<\/h4>\n

To perform a manual backup, open VM explorer<\/strong> and select Datacenter<\/strong> tab. Right click the VM to backup and select Backup<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Select the Host<\/strong> configured as backup repository<\/a> and the option that best fit into your environment. Click OK<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n

The backup is being performed saving the files in the repository specified.<\/p>\n

When the task completes successfully click on Close<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

In the Task History<\/strong> tab you can check the results of recently tasks performed.<\/p>\n

To perform an action with available backups (restore, files check, etc.) in the Backup Explorer<\/strong> tab select the backup to process from the desired VM then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Check backup files selecting Locate Backup files<\/strong> option then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Schedule a backup task<\/h4>\n

To run automatically backup tasks\u00a0at specific time, a scheduled backup is what administrators normally use to backup the environment. Remember that to schedule a task the scheduler must be enabled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From Datacenter<\/strong> tab right click the VM to backup and select Create New Backup Schedule<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Assign a Task Name<\/strong> and configure the Schedule<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> to save the settings.<\/p>\n

Specify the repository and the backup option then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Scheduler<\/strong> tab the configured backup job is listed in the Scheduled Tasks<\/strong> section.<\/p>\n

Restore a VM<\/h2>\n

To restore a VM or a specific file, the procedure is pretty simple.<\/p>\n

From the Backup Explorer<\/strong> tab, select the VM and the backup to restore then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Restore the VM<\/strong> option then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Choose the Target Directory<\/strong> clicking on Choose Parent<\/strong> button, assign a name for the VM registration then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Selecting the Files & Disks<\/strong> tab you can choose which files or disks to restore. Note the option After restore convert as thin disk<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> to proceed with restore.<\/p>\n

When restore completes, click Close<\/strong> button to close the window.<\/p>\n

Enable incremental backup feature<\/h2>\n

Right click the VM to backup then select Backup<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

When the Incremental Backup<\/strong>\u00a0option\u00a0is selected for the first time, a window for the VD Service initialization<\/strong>\u00a0appears since it's needed by this backup type.<\/p>\n

Click Install\/Initialize VD Service<\/strong> button to initialize the VD service.<\/p>\n

Click on the link to download VDDK5.5.3<\/strong> from VMware website.<\/p>\n

Browse<\/strong> the computer and select the downloaded .zip<\/strong> file.<\/p>\n

Click on Initialize VD Service<\/strong> to link VM Explorer with VDDK lib.<\/p>\n

The system starts initializing VDDK.<\/p>\n

When VDDK is successfully initialized, click Close<\/strong> to go back to backup window.<\/p>\n

Click OK<\/strong> to close the window.<\/p>\n

Last step is the activation of the VD Service<\/strong> for the selected ESXi host. Click ESX Server Settings<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

Enable Use VD Service <\/strong>option then click Test Connection<\/strong>. If you are using the ESXi free edition<\/strong> don't enable this option.<\/p>\n

If the test succeeds, click OK<\/strong> to close the window.<\/p>\n

Click Save<\/strong> to enable VD Service.<\/p>\n

Click OK<\/strong> to go back to backup settings.<\/p>\n

Incremental backup can be configured only if Target Host<\/strong> is set to Local Computer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If you set a different Target Host<\/strong> you may receive a warning window.<\/p>\n

The incremental backup task is now configured.<\/p>\n

Add multiple VMs to a backup task<\/h2>\n

From Scheduler<\/strong> tab, click Scheduler<\/strong> menu then select Add Scheduled Task\u00a0<\/strong>option.<\/p>\n

Type a Task Name<\/strong> and set the Schedule<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

Select the backup task just created and click on Add<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

In the Add Task Element<\/strong> window, in the drop down menu select the Add multiple VMs Backup\u00a0<\/strong>option then click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

Select the Source Host<\/strong> then click Select VMs<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

Select the VMs to backup and click Add<\/strong> button. When finished, click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

Select the Target Host<\/strong> and backup option. Append the {VM} tag<\/strong> in the Directory<\/strong> field then click OK<\/strong> to save settings.<\/p>\n

The configured backup appears in the Task Elements<\/strong> table.<\/p>\n

Limitations on backups for ESXi<\/h2>\n

In order to successfully backup your infrastructure, keep in mind some limitations.<\/p>\n

Since it\u2019s not possible to perform snapshots on VM with \"Fault tolerance\" enabled, therefore it is not possible to back up a VM with \"Fault tolerance\".<\/p>\n

In addition incremental backups<\/strong> have the following limitations:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Virtual hardware version<\/strong> is 6 or lower.<\/li>\n
  • Virtual disk is a physical compatibility RDM<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Virtual disk is attached to a shared virtual SCSI bus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
