{"id":12176,"date":"2015-03-04T10:00:33","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=12176"},"modified":"2015-03-04T08:14:08","modified_gmt":"2015-03-04T07:14:08","slug":"pernixdata-fvp-2-0-upgrade-to-2-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/pernixdata-fvp-2-0-upgrade-to-2-5\/","title":{"rendered":"PernixData FVP 2.0 upgrade to 2.5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg01.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The procedure to perform the PernixData FVP 2.0 upgrade to 2.5 is pretty simple but the installation process requires a specific upgrade order.<\/p>\n<p>FVP 2.5 introduces some <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/pernixdata-fvp-2-5-released\/\" target=\"_blank\">new features<\/a> that expand the application capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Before upgrading<\/h2>\n<p>Before upgrading PernixData FVP to new version, keep in mind the following key points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You <strong>cannot revert<\/strong> any component back to a previous version of the software.<\/li>\n<li>If installation cannot proceed for some reason, <strong>uninstall version 2.5<\/strong> and reinstall the older version.<\/li>\n<li>Upgrading the Management Server first allows you to <strong>continue working with FVP<\/strong> while you upgrade the host extension module to version 2.5.<\/li>\n<li>Hosts running a previous version of FVP continue working if the Management Server has been upgraded to version 2.5 but <strong>new features won't be available<\/strong> until you upgrade host extension as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The upgrade process should follow the <strong>following order<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg02.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg02\" width=\"345\" height=\"295\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Transition VMs to Write Through mode<\/h2>\n<p>Before installing the new version of the host extension, all <strong>VMs must be in Write Through mode<\/strong>. This configuration is required only if the <strong>Host Extension Module<\/strong> has to be upgraded to version 2.5 while upgrading the <strong>Management Server<\/strong> can be performed at <strong>any time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To modify the VMs' Write Policy, access <strong>PernixData FVP panel<\/strong> and go to <strong>Manage<\/strong> tab. Click on <strong>Datastores\/VMs<\/strong> and select the VM with <strong>Write Back<\/strong> policy set.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg03.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg03\" width=\"600\" height=\"199\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Edit<\/strong> and select <strong>Write Through<\/strong> as <strong>Write Policy<\/strong> for the selected VM then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg04.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg04\" width=\"600\" height=\"363\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>FVP sets the Write Policy to the new value.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg05.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg05\" width=\"600\" height=\"199\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the <strong>Status<\/strong> reports <strong>Write Through<\/strong>, the VM transition is complete.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg06.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg06\" width=\"600\" height=\"201\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once all VMs in Write Back mode have been transitioned to Write Through mode, the Host Extension Module can be upgraded to new version.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Upgrade the\u00a0Management Server<\/h2>\n<p>Running the Management Server installer, the system detects a <strong>previous installed version<\/strong>. From vSphere Web Client right click the host to upgrade and select <strong>Enter Maintenance Mode<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg14\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg14.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg14\" width=\"388\" height=\"287\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Uninstall previous Host Extension Module<\/h4>\n<p>Before upgrading to new version 2.5, previous Host Extension Module version must be uninstalled from the host using the <strong>prnxuninstall.sh script<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enable SSH<\/strong> in your host and login the ESXi using a tool like PuTTY. From the SSH console run the following command:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># cp \/opt\/pernixdata\/bin\/prnxuninstall.sh \/tmp\/ &amp;&amp; \/tmp\/prnxuninstall.sh<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg15.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg15\" width=\"600\" height=\"525\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Install new Host Extension Module<\/h4>\n<p>When the older version has be uninstalled successfully, the upgrade is performed using the <strong>esxcli command<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>esxcli software vib install -d &lt;zip_filename&gt;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># esxcli software vib install -d \/tmp\/PernixData-host-extension-vSphere5.5.0_2.5.0.0-35945.zip<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg16\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg16.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg16\" width=\"600\" height=\"143\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the upgrade has completed, <strong>backup the ESXi configuration settings<\/strong> by running the following command:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000a0;\"># \/sbin\/auto-backup.sh<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg17\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg17.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg17\" width=\"600\" height=\"111\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove the host from <strong>Maintenance Mode<\/strong> and <strong>disable the SSH<\/strong> connection.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg18\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg18.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg18\" width=\"399\" height=\"288\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat this procedure\u00a0for <strong>each host<\/strong>\u00a0member of the FVP cluster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Enable the vSphere Client plug-in<\/h2>\n<p>While in vSphere Web Client the new FVP version is <strong>already enabled<\/strong>, for vSphere Client the <strong>plug-in must be enabled<\/strong> instead.<\/p>\n<p>Close\/Open the vSphere Client and go to menu <strong>Select Plug-ins &gt; Manage Plug-ins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg19\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg19.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg19\" width=\"453\" height=\"195\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under <strong>Available Plug-ins<\/strong> section, locate the <strong>PernixData FVP vSphere Client Plugin<\/strong> then click <strong>Download and Install<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pernixdatafvp25upg20\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/pernixdatafvp25upg20.jpg\" alt=\"pernixdatafvp25upg20\" width=\"600\" height=\"357\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The system detects a previous version already installed in the system.
