Compared to previous version, patching or updating VCSA 6.0 is a little bit different and is not performed directly from Internet.<\/p>\n

The new VCSA 6.0 offers almost same features of Windows based vCenter Server with the exception of vSphere Update Manager that needs to be installed in a Windows box. How to apply new patches and updates to the appliance?<\/p>\n

Download patches from VMware<\/h2>\n

First step is the download of new patches from VMware Patch Download Center<\/a> selecting VC<\/strong> and 6.0.0<\/strong> version from the drop-down menu. Select the patch to download then\u00a0click on Download<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

No GUI is available<\/strong> to manage VCSA therefore the only way to apply the patch is through the CLI<\/strong> commands. When the download of the patch is complete, the ISO file<\/strong> must be connected to the VCSA.<\/p>\n

Mount the ISO file<\/h2>\n

From the vSphere Web Client<\/strong>, select the VCSA 6.0 VM and click Launch Remote Console<\/strong>\u00a0link.<\/p>\n

From VMRC<\/strong> menu select Removable Devices > CD\/DVD drive 1 > Connect to Disk Image File (iso)<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Select the ISO file to mount and click Open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Install the update<\/h2>\n

Mounted the ISO file, using a tool like PuTTY login to the VCSA via SSH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Before running the update, check from the VCSA console the current version: 6.0.0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To perform the installation\u00a0staging first then remediating<\/strong>\u00a0the update, run the commands:<\/p>\n

Command> software-packages stage --iso
\nCommand> software-packages install --staged<\/span><\/p>\n

To install directly<\/strong>\u00a0the update, run the command:<\/p>\n

Command> software-packages install --iso<\/span><\/p>\n

Press ENTER<\/strong> to scroll down the EULA and type yes + ENTER<\/strong> to begin the update.<\/p>\n

Some minutes are required to complete the procedure.<\/p>\n

A reboot is required<\/strong> to complete the update process then run the command:<\/p>\n

Command> shutdown reboot -r<\/span><\/p>\n

An\u00a0error message is displayed since you must specify a reason<\/strong> for the reboot.<\/p>\n

Run the command again by specifying the reason:<\/p>\n

Command> shutdown reboot -r patching<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The appliance is being rebooted.<\/p>\n

When the reboot process is completed, from the VCSA console check the new\u00a0version: 6.0.0.5120<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The appliance has been updated successfully.<\/p>\n
