Installed and configured Trilead VM Explorer 6.0, the backup task can be manual or scheduled and the configuration is pretty straightforward requiring\u00a0just a\u00a0few clicks.<\/p>\n

Recently it has been introduced also the copy backup feature<\/strong> that allows VM Explorer to copy the backup to another storage to keep a copy in a different location.<\/p>\n

Manual Backup<\/h2>\n

To perform a quick backup of a single virtual machine, click Backup a Virtual Machine<\/strong>\u00a0button\u00a0from main screen.<\/p>\n

Select the Host<\/strong> configured in part 2<\/a> then select the VM to backup. Set the Target<\/strong> options and the Nbr. of backup to keep<\/strong> then click OK<\/strong>\u00a0to start the backup.<\/p>\n

From main\u00a0menu select Tasks > Task History<\/strong>\u00a0to check the backup status.<\/p>\n

The manual backup is displayed as Running<\/strong>. Double click the\u00a0backup Name<\/strong> to display\u00a0the details.<\/p>\n

Details of the selected backup are shown. click OK<\/strong> to close the window.<\/p>\n

When the backup completes without any issue, the Result<\/strong> is set as Success<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To check available backups<\/strong>, from main\u00a0menu\u00a0select\u00a0Management > Backup Explorer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the left side you can also\u00a0apply a filter<\/strong> to display the backups of a specific period.<\/p>\n

Schedule a Backup Task<\/h2>\n

To perform automatic backups of multiple VMs<\/strong>, from the menu select Tasks > Scheduled Tasks<\/strong> to access the configuration window.<\/p>\n

Before proceeding, we need to Enable the Scheduler<\/strong>\u00a0by clicking on the button in the right side.<\/p>\n

Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

The scheduler is now enabled. Right click the area in the left pane and select Add Scheduled Task<\/strong> item.<\/p>\n

Give a Task Name<\/strong> and set the required options in the Schedule<\/strong> section. Click OK<\/strong> when done.<\/p>\n

The configured task appears under Scheduled Tasks<\/strong>\u00a0section and the details are displayed in the right pane.<\/p>\n

In the right pane click Add<\/strong> button to configure a Backup Task.<\/p>\n

Click on\u00a0Multi VM<\/strong> backup type.<\/p>\n

Set the correct Host and click Select VMs<\/strong> button to select VMs to backup.<\/p>\n

Select the VMs to backup and click Add<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> when done.<\/p>\n

Configure the required\u00a0Target<\/strong> options appending\u00a0the suffix \/{VM}<\/strong> in the Directory<\/strong> field to group backups with same VM's display name.<\/p>\n

Select Files & Disks<\/strong> tab and set After backup convert as thin disk<\/strong> option to save space in the storage. Don't enable this option if you want to encrypt the backup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Snapshot<\/strong> tab you define the Virtual Machine Snapshot Options<\/strong> and enabled the\u00a0Storage Snapshot<\/strong> if your storage supports this feature.<\/p>\n

In Connection<\/strong> tab you have the possibility to encrypt the backups<\/strong>\u00a0with a password. Use this feature carefully because it has some restrictions<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0the risk to have unusable backups if the password is lost.<\/p>\n

In Advanced<\/strong> tab set the options you want to have for Powered On<\/strong> and Suspended<\/strong>\u00a0VMs.<\/p>\n

Use the Verify Backup<\/strong> tab to set the Instant Backup Test<\/strong> to check if the backed up VM can be started. Click OK<\/strong> to save the backup configuration.<\/p>\n

If Target Host<\/strong> is not set to Local Computer or Cloud<\/strong>, Instant Backup Test feature cannot be used.<\/p>\n

Configured the Backup Task, click Add<\/strong> to setup the email alert.<\/p>\n

Under Other<\/strong> section, click on E-Mail Report<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Fill the required fields then click Test<\/strong> if you want to test the alert. Click OK<\/strong> to save the configuration.<\/p>\n

The Backup Task<\/strong> configuration is complete.<\/p>\n

To run the backup without waiting for the scheduled time, click on Run This Task Now<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Configure Backup Copy Task<\/h2>\n

A Backup Copy allows the administrators to copy main backup to another location to guarantee\u00a0an higher level of security.<\/p>\n

From Tasks > Scheduled Tasks<\/strong>, right click the area on the left pane and select the Add Scheduled Task<\/strong> item.<\/p>\n

Give a Task Name<\/strong> and set the Schedule<\/strong> parameters then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Under\u00a0Scheduled Tasks<\/strong>\u00a0section, the new task has been created.<\/p>\n

In the right pane, click Add<\/strong> to configure the Backup Copy task.<\/p>\n

Under Copy Backup<\/strong>, select To Server<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

From the list select the backup to copy then\u00a0click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0the Target Server<\/strong> and the Target Location<\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0the Browse<\/strong>. Specify the number of copies<\/strong>\u00a0to retain then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Save<\/strong> to save the configuration.<\/p>\n

The Backup Copy<\/strong> setup is now complete and it appears under Task Elements<\/strong>\u00a0area.<\/p>\n

To manually start the task, click Run this Task Now<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Click OK<\/strong> to start the Backup Copy.<\/p>\n

From menu Tasks > Task History<\/strong>, double click the running task name to display\u00a0the details.<\/p>\n

When the Copy Backup Task has completed, go to Management > Backup Explorer<\/strong> to check available backups. Copied backups are identified by\u00a0(Copied)<\/strong> label.<\/p>\n
