Altaro VM Backup can store an offsite copy of your backups increasing data integrity and ideal for a good\u00a0Disaster Recovery<\/strong> strategy.<\/p>\n

The procedure requires the installation of the Altaro Offsite Server tool<\/strong> with\u00a0a minimal configuration to setup.<\/p>\n

Install Altaro Offsite Server<\/h2>\n

From Altaro website, download the\u00a0Altaro Offsite Server<\/a>\u00a0tool and run the installer. To use this feature, you need to open ports\u00a0TCP 35101 - 35105 <\/strong>and 35109 - 35111<\/strong>\u00a0in the firewall. Click Install<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n

When the installation process has\u00a0complete, click Finish<\/strong> to exit the setup wizard.<\/p>\n

Launch the Altaro Offsite Server Management Console<\/strong>\u00a0from the Windows start menu, select Connect to local server<\/strong> option then click Connect<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n

Select\u00a0Configure Accounts<\/strong>\u00a0item.<\/p>\n

Click on Add a new account<\/strong> button. From the window type the\u00a0Display\u00a0Name<\/strong> and the Credentials<\/strong> to use then click on Choose a storage area<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Select the local disk<\/strong> or a network location<\/strong> and specify a directory through the\u00a0Choose a sub directory<\/strong>\u00a0button. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

Click Save<\/strong> to store the configuration.<\/p>\n

The new account has been created successfully.<\/p>\n

Add an Offsite Location<\/h2>\n

Access the VM Backup console and access the Backup Locations<\/strong> tab. Click on Add Offsite Location<\/strong> button to add the configured Offsite Server.<\/p>\n

Select the Backup Location type<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Insert the required parameters then click Test Connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When the connection has been verified successfully, click Finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The new Offsite Location has been configured.<\/p>\n

From Master Encryption Key<\/strong> tab type\u00a0the required key\u00a0to encrypt the offsite backups<\/strong> then click Save Changes<\/strong> at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n

To run the offsite backup, access the\u00a0Take Offsite Copy<\/strong>\u00a0tab.<\/p>\n

Select the VMs to backup and click the link\u00a0Click here to set Offsite Location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the Backup Locations<\/strong> tab, drag and drop the selected VMs to the Offsite Location then click Save Changes<\/strong> at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n

Take an Offsite backup<\/h2>\n

From the Take Offsite Copy<\/strong> tab, select the VM to backup then click Take Offsite Copy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A successful backup<\/strong> is required to allow offsite copy. Click Yes<\/strong> to access the Take Backup<\/strong> section to take the backup for the selected VM.<\/p>\n

Select the VM and click on\u00a0Take Backup<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

When the first backup has completed, go back to Take Offsite Copy tab, select the just processed VM then click Take Offsite Copy<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Successful\u00a0Offsite Copy<\/strong>\u00a0message confirms\u00a0the\u00a0backup completed successfully.<\/p>\n

Schedule Offsite Copy<\/h4>\n

Offsite Copy can be scheduled from Schedule<\/strong> tab. After setting up the backup schedule, check also the days under the Follow up with an Offsite copy...<\/strong> section then click Save<\/strong> to store the configuration.<\/p>\n

Seeding<\/h4>\n

To transfer a full backup of your data to an Altaro Offsite Server, the required bandwidth<\/strong> to that server may be limited and the process\u00a0time consuming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Using the Seeding to disk<\/strong> feature, you have the option to manually take the first full backup<\/strong> to the Altaro Offsite Server physically then run only incremental copies over the WAN connection.<\/p>\n

From Take Offsite Copy<\/strong> tab, select the VMs to backup then click Seed to Disk<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Select the Backup\u00a0Location Type<\/strong> you want to seed to then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Choose the drive and specify a directory by clicking on Chosen folder<\/strong> link. Click Seed To Disk<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n

Selected VMs are seeded to selected media.\u00a0Once the backup has been completed, take the removable disk to the Offsite Server<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the Offsite Server console<\/strong> select Configure Accounts<\/strong> tab, right click the previously configured account then select Import seed from disk<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

In the Seed Import<\/strong> window, click Browse<\/strong> to choose the location to store VMs to be imported.<\/p>\n

Select the\u00a0local disk<\/strong> and specify the directory<\/strong> where seeded VMs have been stored then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select the VMs to import then click Start<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The VMs are being imported.<\/p>\n

When the VMs have been imported successfully, click Close<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Full Backup is now available on\u00a0the\u00a0Offsite Server allowing\u00a0VM Backup to transfer\u00a0incremental backups<\/strong> only over WAN saving time and bandwidth.<\/p>\n
