machine to another some steps are required to avoid\u00a0data loss and to keep\u00a0the disk configuration.<\/p>\n<p>The RDM allows a virtual machine to directly access and use the storage device and before proceeding with the move, the\u00a0virtual machine where the RDM is currently attached must be\u00a0shut down.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From vSphere Web Client (vSphere 5.5 has been used in the example), right click the\u00a0VM to process and select <strong>Shutdown Guest OS<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15666 size-full\" <strong>Yes<\/strong> to confirm the shut down.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15667 size-full\" title=\"moveexistingrdm03\" RDM<\/h2>\n<p>From vSphere Web Client, select the VM and click <strong>Edit Settings<\/strong> in the <strong>VM Hardware<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind this procedure\u00a0destroys the <strong>mapping file<\/strong>, not the LUN content.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15668 size-full\" title=\"moveexistingrdm04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm04.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm04\" width=\"504\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Identify the <strong>RDM hard disk<\/strong> to\u00a0remove.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15669 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm05\" sign<\/strong> to remove the disk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15670 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm06\" from datastore<\/strong>\u00a0option then click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15671 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm07\" the VM.\u00a0<strong>LUN and its contenut<\/strong>\u00a0are not altered during this step.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15672 size-full\" title=\"moveexistingrdm08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm08.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm08\" width=\"330\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Attach the RDM to the new VM<\/h2>\n<p>In the new virtual machine, click <strong>Edit Settings<\/strong>\u00a0under the <strong>VM Hardware<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15673 size-full\" title=\"moveexistingrdm09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm09.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm09\" width=\"422\" height=\"552\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>New device<\/strong>\u00a0field, click the right arrow to open the\u00a0drop-down menu and select <strong>RDM Disk<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15674 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm10-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm10\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Add<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15675 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm11-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm11\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the list of SAN disks or LUNs, select the\u00a0LUN to access directly and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15676 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm12-600x169.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm12\" width=\"600\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click on the just attached <strong>New Hard disk<\/strong> and select the appropriate\u00a0<strong>Compatibility Mode<\/strong> (i.e. <em>Physical<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15677 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm13-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm13\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to save the configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15678 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm14\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm14-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm14\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new RDM disk (Hard disk 2) is now attached to the VM.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15679 size-full\" title=\"moveexistingrdm15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm15.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm15\" width=\"330\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Access the processed virtual machine (a Windows VM in the example) and open the <strong>Disk Management<\/strong> tool. Right click the new attached disk and select <strong>Online<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15680 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm16\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm16-600x493.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm16\" width=\"600\" height=\"493\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The partition previously configured in the old VM is retained and is now available to\u00a0the new VM.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15681 size-large\" title=\"moveexistingrdm17\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm17-600x493.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm17\" width=\"600\" height=\"493\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To check if\u00a0the RDM move procedure have been completed successfully, try accessing files and folders using\u00a0<strong>Windows Explorer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15682\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/moveexistingrdm18.jpg\" alt=\"moveexistingrdm18\" width=\"435\" height=\"293\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>As best practice, before moving disks and LUNs be sure to have a <strong>full working backup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"firma\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Moving an existing RDM from one virtual machine to another some steps are required to avoid\u00a0data loss and to keep\u00a0the disk configuration.
