Veeam Backup & Replication 9\u00a0supports and understands vSphere tags allowing the creation of backup jobs by\u00a0selecting the VMs to backup based on tags.<\/p>\n

Tags concept has been introduced in VMware vSphere 5.5<\/a> and basically it\u00a0is a label you can assign<\/strong> to any object (VMs, storage and so on...) in the vSphere inventory. You can assign a tag to a specific category<\/strong> to better identify a VM type or simply the installed OS. Currently only one tag<\/strong> at time can be processed.<\/p>\n

Create Tags in vSphere<\/h2>\n

Open vSphere Web Client and select Tags<\/strong> in the left\u00a0pane. Select Items<\/strong> tab, click\u00a0Tags<\/strong>\u00a0then\u00a0click on the New tag icon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter a Name<\/strong>, a Description<\/strong> then select New Category<\/strong> in the Category<\/strong> drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

Specify a Category Name<\/strong>, a Description<\/strong>, select\u00a0Many tags per object<\/strong>\u00a0as Cardinality<\/strong> then select Virtual Machine<\/strong> as Associable Object Type<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Repeat same steps to create all the tags you need.<\/p>\n

No Backup tag<\/h4>\n

A\u00a0useful tip suggested during Veeam events is the\u00a0use of the No Backup tag<\/strong>.\u00a0The No Backup Tag can be used\u00a0to specify which VMs are not included in any backup on purpose. In big environments operations are often delegated to different administrators and the use of No Backup tag can help to quickly figure out\u00a0that a specific VM was intentionally excluded<\/strong> from any backup. VMs members of this group won't be associated to any backup job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Categories<\/strong>\u00a0tab to display created Categories.<\/p>\n

Apply Tags to VMs<\/h2>\n

To apply tags to VMs, from vSphere Web Client right click the desired VM and select Tags & Custom Attributes > Assign Tag<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Select the tag to assign to the VM then\u00a0click Assign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Summary<\/strong>\u00a0tab under Tags<\/strong>\u00a0area the assigned tag is displayed.<\/p>\n

Repeat same procedure to assign tags to all other virtual machines<\/strong>\u00a0with same RPO request.<\/p>\n

Configure Backup Job using Tags<\/h2>\n

Open Veeam console and create a backup job by clicking Backup Job<\/strong> button in the Backup & Replication<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n

Specify a Name<\/strong> for the Backup and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Add<\/strong> to add the objects to the backup. Click the tag icon<\/strong> to display VMs and Tags<\/strong>,\u00a0select the item you want to include in the job then click Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Selected Tag is displayed as group of VMs to backup. VMs are automatically added<\/strong> to the job when they are assigned a particular tag.\u00a0Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Specify the Retention policy<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enable the requested processing features like application-aware then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the Schedule<\/strong> for the backup job and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to save the job configuration.<\/p>\n

Run the backup<\/h2>\n

Configured the backup job with\u00a0the correct tags, right click the created Backup Job<\/strong> and select Start<\/strong> to run the backup.<\/p>\n

The backup is being executed.<\/p>\n

The job\u00a0has completed successfully and listed in the available Backups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When a Full VM Restore<\/strong> is performed, you have the option Restore VM tags<\/strong>\u00a0to restore tags that were assigned to the VM when backup was taken.<\/p>\n

Tags\u00a0can be used to define a policy-driven<\/strong> data protection and they are backed up as any other VM property<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
