Virtual SAN is the solution VMware introduced to meet the needs of remote and branch offices\u00a0at very cost effective<\/strong> pricing.<\/p>\n

Despite the 25 VMs limit per site<\/strong>, the very interesting feature introduced with VSAN ROBO edition is the capability of running Virtual SAN on only 2 nodes<\/strong>\u00a0with the use of a\u00a0witness appliance (ESXi nested) that doesn't require an additional license.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Configure VSAN network<\/h2>\n

Select the host to enable VSAN and go to Manage > Networking > VMKernel adapters<\/strong> tab. Click Add host networking<\/strong> icon to setup the\u00a0new VMKernel adapter.<\/p>\n

Select VMKernel Network Adapter<\/strong> option and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Select\u00a0an existing\u00a0standard\u00a0switch<\/strong> field, click Browse<\/strong> and select the vSwitch to use. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm then Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter a Network label<\/strong> and specify the VLAN ID<\/strong>\u00a0to use. Enable the\u00a0Virtual\u00a0SAN traffic<\/strong>\u00a0service and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Assign a static IPv4 address<\/strong> and a Subnet mask<\/strong>\u00a0then\u00a0click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to save the configuration.<\/p>\n

Repeat same steps<\/strong> for the other host used for VSAN setup.<\/p>\n

Configure VSAN cluster<\/h2>\n

If your cluster is configured with vSphere HA, you can use Virtual SAN with a vSphere HA cluster<\/strong> only if the following conditions are met:<\/p>\n

  • The cluster's ESXi hosts all must be version 5.5 or later<\/li>\n
  • The cluster must have a minimum of three ESXi hosts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If you have only two hosts, before configuring VSAN\u00a0make sure vSphere HA is disabled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Select the cluster to configure and go to\u00a0Manage > Settings > General<\/strong>\u00a0tab. Click on\u00a0Configure<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

    Set Add disk to storage<\/strong> field as Manual<\/strong>\u00a0and choose\u00a0Configure two host Virtual SAN cluster<\/strong> option. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    If the all the hosts in the cluster have a VMKernel adapter configured<\/strong> for VSAN traffic enabled, click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Select which\u00a0disks should be claimed\u00a0for cache<\/strong>\u00a0in the VSAN cluster\u00a0and click the Claim for cache\u00a0tier<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n

    Select which\u00a0disks should be claimed\u00a0for capacity<\/strong>\u00a0in the VSAN cluster\u00a0and click the Claim for capacity tier<\/strong>\u00a0icon.<\/p>\n

    Take a look at the Total cache and capacity<\/strong> available in the VSAN cluster and click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Select the Witness host<\/strong>\u00a0previously configured and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Select the Witness' disks for cache and capacity<\/strong> tier then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click Finish<\/strong> to complete the configuration.<\/p>\n

    When the configuration has been completed, the Virtual SAN is set as ON<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Check Fault Domains configuration from Manage > Settings > Fault Domains & Stretched Cluster<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n

    Fault Domains allow to maintain a full copy<\/strong> of the virtual machine data even when a rack fails<\/strong>\u00a0since\u00a0virtual machine components are deployed across the Fault Domains. In case of a single rack failure will not make the VM inaccessible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    In the\u00a0Monitor > Virtual SAN > Health<\/strong>\u00a0tab you can check the VSAN status.<\/p>\n

    The new vsanDatastore<\/strong>\u00a0storage is now available in the storage area.<\/p>\n

    When the configuration has been completed, vSphere HA can be enabled again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The installation of VSAN solution is pretty easy and cost-effective<\/strong>. There is no need to purchase expensive SANs<\/strong> anymore\u00a0as well as expensive Support Contracts<\/strong> from storage vendors.<\/p>\n
