To provide a <strong>highly available<\/strong> storage\u00a0solution all the infrastructure components have to be <strong>redundant<\/strong> avoiding single points of failure. In addition to clustered servers, make sure that also all <strong>switches used<\/strong> are redundant.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21336 size-full\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall02.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall02\" width=\"566\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Setup VMKernel for iSCSI<\/h4>\n<p>From VMware vSphere Web Client, select the first host to configure and go to the\u00a0<strong>Configure<\/strong> tab. Move the second NIC to <strong>Unused adapters<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21346 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall12-600x350.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall12\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Create Heartbeat channel<\/h4>\n<p>Now you have to create the Heartbeat channel used to <strong>avoid the split-brain<\/strong> situations\u00a0<span class=\"fontstyle0\">when the HA\u00a0cluster nodes are unable to synchronize, but continue to accept write commands from the initiators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From the <strong>Configuration<\/strong> tab select <strong>Virtual Switches<\/strong> and click on <strong>Add\u00a0Host Networking<\/strong> icon.\u00a0Select <strong>Virtual Machine Port Group for a Standard\u00a0<\/strong><b>Switch<\/b>\u00a0option and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21347 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall13-600x352.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall13\" width=\"600\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Create a <strong>New standard switch<\/strong> (recommended) or choose the <strong>Select an existing standard switch<\/strong>\u00a0option to setup the Port Group\u00a0and click <strong>Next<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21353 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall18\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall18-600x322.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall18\" width=\"600\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Create Synchronization channel<\/h4>\n<p>Now you have to create t<span class=\"fontstyle0\">he synchronization channel used to <strong>mirror every write operation<\/strong> addressing the HA storage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Create a new vSwitch and define only one virtual machine Port Group\u00a0for the Sync channel.\u00a0From the <strong>Configuration<\/strong> tab select <strong>Virtual Switches<\/strong> and click on <strong>Add\u00a0Host Networking<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n<p>Select <strong>Virtual Machine Port Group for a Standard\u00a0<\/strong><b>Switch<\/b>\u00a0option and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21354 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall19\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall19-600x352.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall19\" width=\"600\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Create a <strong>New standard switch<\/strong> (recommended) or choose the <strong>Select an existing standard switch<\/strong>\u00a0option to setup the Port Group\u00a0and click <strong>Next<\/strong>. When done, the second host will be configured with <strong>iSCSI and HeartBeat channels<\/strong> in <em>vSwitch0<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21360 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall25\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall25-600x396.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall25\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While <em>vSwitch1<\/em> will have the <strong>Sync channel<\/strong> configured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21361 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall26\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall26-600x394.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall26\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Bind iSCSI port<\/h4>\n<p>Select the first ESXi host\u00a0and go to <strong>Configure &gt; Storage Adapters<\/strong>. Enable the <strong>iSCSI Software Adapter<\/strong>, select the configured adapter and in the <strong>Network Port Binding<\/strong> tab click the <strong>Add<\/strong> icon to bind the adapter with <strong>VMKernel Adapter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21362 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall27\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall27-600x451.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall27\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat same procedure for the second host.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21363 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall28\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall28-600x366.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall28\" width=\"600\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Deploy StarWind Server<\/h2>\n<p>The VM on which StarWind will be deployed should have the following prerequisites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>OS<\/strong>: Windows 2012 R2<\/li>\n<li><strong>Memory<\/strong>: at least 8 Gb (plus size of RAM cache, which you are planning to use)<\/li>\n<li><strong>CPUs<\/strong>: 4 virtual sockets, 1 core per socket<\/li>\n<li><strong>HDD1<\/strong>: 100 Gb for OS<\/li>\n<li><strong>HDD2<\/strong>: size you are planning to use as a shared storage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each hard disk should be <strong>Thick Provisioned Eager Zeroed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NIC1<\/strong>: Management<\/li>\n<li><strong>NIC2<\/strong>: iSCSI for VMs<\/li>\n<li><strong>NIC3<\/strong>: Sync for VMs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All network adapters should be <strong>VMXNET3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Add new disk and NIC to the server<\/h4>\n<p>Once the deployment of the Windows Server has been completed, right click the VM and select <strong>Edit Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21364 size-full\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall29\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/starwindvsaninstall29.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall29\" width=\"573\" height=\"434\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>New device<\/strong> field select <strong>New Hard Disk<\/strong>\u00a0item from the drop-down menu and click <strong>Add<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21416 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall30\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/starwindvsaninstall30-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall30\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Set the <strong>disk size<\/strong> and make sure <strong>Disk Provisioning<\/strong> is set to\u00a0<strong>Thick Provisioned\u00a0Eager Zeroed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21417 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall31\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/starwindvsaninstall31-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall31\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <strong>New device<\/strong> field select <strong>Network<\/strong>\u00a0item from the drop-down menu and click <strong>Add<\/strong> button twice in order to add the required NIC devices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21418 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall32\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/starwindvsaninstall32-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall32\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Assign the correct network to the <strong>Network adapters<\/strong>\u00a0then click <strong>OK<\/strong> to save the configuration. Keep in mind that one NIC (in the example the adapter with network\u00a0<em>VM Traffic-10<\/em>) will be used for <strong>iSCSI network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21422 size-large\" title=\"starwindvsaninstall33\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/starwindvsaninstall33-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"starwindvsaninstall33\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat<strong> same deployment procedure<\/strong> for the second StarWind Server.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Install StartWind software<\/h4>\n<p>Download the <span class=\"fontstyle0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwindsoftware.com\/registration-starwind-virtual-san\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarWind Virtual SAN<\/a>\u00a0for VMware\u00a0vSphere and run the installer.
