{"id":21169,"date":"2017-06-06T09:00:05","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T07:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=21169\/"},"modified":"2020-03-15T18:08:43","modified_gmt":"2020-03-15T17:08:43","slug":"veeam-cdp-replication-closeup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-cdp-replication-closeup\/","title":{"rendered":"Veeam CDP Replication close up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21173 size-full\" title=\"veeamcdp01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/veeamcdp01.jpg\" alt=\"veeamcdp01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0announced version 10 of Veeam Backup &amp; Replication backup solution introduces a brand new feature called <strong>Veeam Continuous Data Protection<\/strong> (CDP).<\/p>\n<p>CDP is basically a <strong>continuous replication job<\/strong> that lower the replication RPO from <strong>minutes to seconds<\/strong>, 15 seconds is the default.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Compared to standard Veeam Replication that uses snapshots to do replication, the new capability uses the new <strong>VMware vSphere API for I\/O\u00a0Filtering<\/strong> (VAIO) technology to intercept and redirect VM I\/O requests\u00a0to the replica without <strong>creating VM snapshots<\/strong>. This solution has a very little impact on VMs and storage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>vSphere APIs for IO Filtering (VAIO)<\/h2>\n<p>VAIO is a Framework that enables their parties (Partners) to develop filters that run in ESXi and can <strong>intercept any I\/O requests<\/strong> from a guest operating system to a virtual disk. An I\/O will not be issued or committed to disk without being <strong>processed by I\/O Filters<\/strong> created by 3rd parties.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21174 size-large\" title=\"veeamcdp02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/veeamcdp02-600x355.jpg\" alt=\"veeamcdp02\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>CDP Policy Job<\/h2>\n<p>The CDP Policy Job is a policy <strong>similar to Replication Job<\/strong> but has a different <strong>Schedule<\/strong> page.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21175 size-large\" title=\"veeamcdp03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/veeamcdp03-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeamcdp03\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can define three schedules for CDP:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>RPO<\/strong> -\u00a0the maximum acceptable\u00a0data loss in case of a protected VM failure (default 15 seconds)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Short retention<\/strong> - how many restore points of previous setting (RPO) you want to keep (default 4 hours)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long retention<\/strong> - additional restore points to take\/keep (as default a restore point is taken every 8 hours and kept for 7 days)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The restore process is a little bit different compared to standard replication and the VM can be recovered\u00a0to a <strong>specific\u00a0state<\/strong>\u00a0identified in the screen with a different color:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>crash-consistent<\/strong>\u00a0- the data is in the identical state it was in at the time of the backup<\/li>\n<li><strong>application-consistent<\/strong>\u00a0- backups also capture all data in memory and all transactions in process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21176 size-large\" title=\"veeamcdp04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/veeamcdp04-600x391.jpg\" alt=\"veeamcdp04\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Due to the <strong>impact on network requirements<\/strong>, CDP should be used for <strong>critical business VMs<\/strong>\u00a0where a lower RPO is required.
