The IT staff needs to manage tape media, rotate tapes, monitor backups, and so on. Tapes and their storage in a off-site location requires additional costs and there is a certain risk of failure since it's a complete manual process.

The concept behind this solution is the replacement of physical tapes in the existing backup infrastructure providing a fully automated replication and tiering to Amazon cloud storage. Data are replicated to fast Amazon S3 cloud storage and provides smart de-staging to more cost-efficient Glacier.

This new solution brings the following key benefits:

Implementation of Disk-to-Disk-to-Cloud (D2D2C) backup strategy

StarWind Cloud VTL is a Veeam ready solution

Ability to “tier” backups between cloud storage with different performance and efficiency characteristics

What is VTL

Using a tape-based backup, the transfer of data is generally slow and increases the RTO. To speed up the process the only possible solution is the use of cache of disk drives. Using the cache as virtual tape library, data are written to the cache (SATA HDD) in a faster way fitting the backup windows and eliminating the load to the infrastructure.

StarWind Virtual Tape Library (VTL) converts inexpensive SATA drives into virtual tapes emulating real existing tape hardware with the possibility to offload data to public cloud storage like Amazon Glacier and Amazon S3 definitively less expensive.

This solution provides a compliance to the 3-2-1 backup rule.

Veeam integration

StarWind Cloud VTL is a Veeam ready solution and each software component has been pre-tested and checked for compatibility.

VTL technology will be introduced in the upcoming Veeam Backup & Replication v10.

StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam is available as 30-day trial for testing purposes.

StarWind Cloud VTL for AWS and Veeam is a new product by StarWind that eliminates the need for the physical tape by emulating industry-standard tape hardware.
