Data reside on <strong>AWS S3<\/strong> storage service with the capability to move the data to\u00a0more cost-efficient <strong>Amazon Glacier Storage<\/strong> for <strong>long-term retention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To allow Veeam Backup &amp; Replication to offload backups to the cloud, the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/storagegateway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazon VTL Storage Gateway<\/a> must be used to connect Veeam with AWS.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21923 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/veeamvtlawss3glacier02-600x214.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier02\" width=\"600\" height=\"214\" \/><\/p>\n<p>AWS Storage Gateway is a <strong>hybrid storage service<\/strong> that enables the on-premises applications to use the AWS Cloud storage for backup and archiving, disaster recovery, cloud bursting, storage tiering, and migration.<\/p>\n<p>Standard protocols, such as <strong>NFS and iSCSI<\/strong>, are used by the Amazon gateway appliance to connect the local application to AWS storage services (S3, Glacier) providing storage for\u00a0files,\u00a0volumes, and\u00a0virtual tapes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Configure AWS Storage Gateway<\/h2>\n<p>Login to the AWS console and select the\u00a0<strong>Storage Gateway<\/strong>\u00a0option under <strong>Storage<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21924 size-full\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/veeamvtlawss3glacier03.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier03\" width=\"459\" height=\"469\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the <strong>Select gateway type<\/strong> tab, select <strong>Tape gateway<\/strong> and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21925 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/veeamvtlawss3glacier04-600x426.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier04\" width=\"600\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the host platform to use (in the example VMware ESXi) and click on <strong>Download image<\/strong> button. Go to <strong>VM Options<\/strong> tab, expand <strong>VMware Tools<\/strong> and enable the <strong>Synchronize guest time with host<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21937 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/veeamvtlawss3glacier15-600x626.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier15\" width=\"600\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now go to <strong>Virtual Hardware<\/strong> tab. Add two new Hard Disk devices and assign for each disk a new SCSI Controller set as <strong>VMware Paravirtual<\/strong>. The disks will be used by the gateway appliance for\u00a0the following purposes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"itemizedlist\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"listitem\"><strong><span class=\"topcom\">Cache storage<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0- cache storage acts as the on-premises durable store for data that is waiting to upload to Amazon S3 from the upload buffer. You should <strong>allocate at least 20%<\/strong>\u00a0of your existing file store size as cache storage and it should also be <strong>larger than the upload buffer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"listitem\"><strong><span class=\"topcom\">Upload buffer<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0- the gateway stores incoming data in a <strong>staging area<\/strong> to prepare for upload to Amazon S3.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To avoid errors from AWS, the disks size should be <strong>at least 150 GB<\/strong>. Double check the entered <strong>IP address<\/strong> is correct then click on <strong>Connect to gateway<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21953 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier26\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier26-600x334.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier26\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Gateway time zone<\/strong>, <strong>Gateway name<\/strong> and the <strong>Backup application<\/strong> used. Note the Tape drive type is <strong>IBM-ULT3580-TD5<\/strong>. Configure the\u00a0<strong>Upload buffer<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Cache<\/strong>\u00a0roles to the appliance's disks and click\u00a0<strong>Save and Continue<\/strong>\u00a0to save the setup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21958 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier28\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier28-600x412.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier28\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The gateway has been created successfully.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21960 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier29\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier29-1-600x316.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier29\" width=\"600\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the backup application used, you have to choose the recommended Medium changer.\u00a0Select the <strong>Medium Changer<\/strong> and click <strong>Change media changer type<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21961 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier30\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier30-600x355.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier30\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since Veeam version 9.5 is used in this example, the <strong>Medium Changer Type<\/strong> to configure is <strong>AWS-Gateway-VTL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21962 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier31\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier31-600x460.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier31\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the <strong>AWS-Gateway-VTL<\/strong> type then click <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21965 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier32\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier32-600x247.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier32\" width=\"600\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>VTL device type<\/strong> has been set to AWS-Gateway-VTL.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21970 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier33\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier33-600x414.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier33\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Create tapes<\/h4>\n<p>Final step of the gateway configuration is the <strong>creation of the tapes<\/strong> used to store the backup data. Go to <strong>Tapes<\/strong> tab and click <strong>Create tapes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21971 size-large\" title=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier34\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/veeamvtlawss3glacier34-600x253.jpg\" alt=\"veeamvtlawss3glacier34\" width=\"600\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Number of tapes<\/strong> to create, <strong>Capacity<\/strong> (at least 100 GB) and a <strong>Barcode prefix<\/strong>.
