{"id":25007,"date":"2018-07-24T09:00:20","date_gmt":"2018-07-24T07:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=25007"},"modified":"2020-03-21T14:41:02","modified_gmt":"2020-03-21T13:41:02","slug":"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling\/","title":{"rendered":"Nakivo Backup &#038; Replication: Bandwidth Throttling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25008 size-full\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-01.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Latest release of <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-backup-replication-7-4-is-ga-with-automated-vm-failover\/\">Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication 7.4<\/a> introduced the\u00a0Bandwidth Throttling feature to\u00a0<strong>limit the speed of data transfer<\/strong>\u00a0during a backup job.<\/p>\n<p>Bandwidth Throttling is an option used to limit the bandwidth a backup or replication job can use to <strong>avoid network congestion<\/strong> if the\u00a0network is already loaded at the time of a VM backup or replication job. By default Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication tries to take advantage of <strong>all available bandwidth<\/strong> and if no limits are set, the entire network performance may suffer affecting the performance of applications.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25009 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-02-600x261.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This feature can be very useful if you need to run a backup or replication job during working hours where the network is generally fully used. In order to\u00a0prevent a VM backup job from consuming more than the allowed bandwidth, you need to <strong>enable Bandwidth Throttling on a per-job basis<\/strong> for VM backup, backup copy, <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-backup-replication-configure-vmware-replication\/\">replication<\/a>, and recovery jobs. This feature can be enabled in <strong>all supported platforms<\/strong>\u00a0by Nakivo (Hyper-V, VMware and <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-backup-replication-storing-backups-amazon-s3\/\">AWS<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Configure\u00a0Bandwidth Throttling<\/h2>\n<p>The configuration of Bandwidth Throttling is pretty simple and requires only few steps.<\/p>\n<p>Access the Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication console, enter the correct credentials and click<strong> Log In<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25010 size-full\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-03.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-03\" width=\"400\" height=\"213\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To enable the Bandwidth Throttling for an existing backup job, from the Dashboard right click the job to configure and select\u00a0<strong>Edit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25011 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-04-600x550.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"550\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Go to <strong>5. Options<\/strong>\u00a0tab to access the configuration page of Bandwidth Throttling feature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25012 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-05-600x375.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enable the <strong>Limit job bandwidth to<\/strong> option and specify the amount of bandwidth to grant. Click <strong>Save<\/strong> to save the backup configuration job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25014 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-06-600x144.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"144\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the job have been saved, during next run the used bandwidth <strong>will not exceed the threshold set<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Testing Bandwidth Throttling<\/h2>\n<p>To test the impact of this feature, two new backup jobs have been created:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup VMs BT disabled<\/li>\n<li>Backup VMs BT enabled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both backup jobs process the same virtual machines, then <strong>same amount of data<\/strong> have to be backed up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Running a Backup job with BT disabled<\/h4>\n<p>Right click the backup job with Bandwidth Throttling disabled and select <strong>Run Job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25015 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-07-600x552.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-07\" width=\"600\" height=\"552\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By default, Nakivo will <strong>try to use all available<\/strong> bandwidth with a Speed, in this example, <strong>above 45 MB\/s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25016 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-08-600x160.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-08\" width=\"600\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The backup job took about <strong>15 minutes<\/strong> to complete.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25017 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-09-600x361.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-09\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Running a Backup job with BT enabled<\/h4>\n<p>For this test, the Bandwidth Throttling has been enabled and <strong>set to 10 Mbit\/s<\/strong>\u00a0in a new backup job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25018 size-full\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-10.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-10\" width=\"515\" height=\"141\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right click the backup job with Bandwidth Throttling enabled and select <strong>Run Job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25019 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-11-600x578.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-11\" width=\"600\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time Nakivo is not able to use all the network bandwidth, but it will be <strong>limited to 10 MB\/s<\/strong>. The data transfer will be limited increasing the time required to complete the backup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25020 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-12-600x158.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"158\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time, the backup job took more than\u00a0<strong>7 hours<\/strong>\u00a0to complete, a lot of time. If you need to perform <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/how-calculate-rto-reduce-downtime-nakivo\/\">full backups<\/a>, Bandwidth Throttling heavily affect the backup performance and a dedicated maintenance window should be used instead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25038 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-13-600x361.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-backup-replication-bandwidth-throttling-13\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course limiting the available bandwidth, also the data transfer is limited.
