vCenter Server 6.7 Update 1<\/a> provides the Converge Tool a great tool to converge an external PSC into the vCSA in a straighforward and completely automated way.<\/p>\n With the release of vSphere 6.7 Update 1, VMware has deprecated the topology model<\/strong> of the vCenter Server with an external PSC in favour of the embedded topology<\/strong> instead.<\/p>\n Previously the use of an external PSC was required to support the Enhanced Linked Mode<\/strong> (ELM) but this deployment model is no longer needed with vSphere 6.7. Latest release supports ELM also in an embedded topology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Converge Tool can be executed in\u00a0Windows, Linux and Mac<\/strong> OSs. In the vCSA 6.7 Update 1 .ISO file, the\u00a0vcsa-converge-cli<\/strong> folder includes three sub-folders (lin64, mac and win32) containing the tool for the supported operating systems.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before proceeding with the procedure using the Converge Tool, keep in mind the following prerequisites<\/strong>:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before proceeding with converging external PSC and vCenter Server, the vSphere DRS feature in the vCenter must be disabled or set to manual<\/strong> to avoid issue with the vCSA during the procedure.<\/p>\n From the vSphere Client, right click the cluster and select Settings<\/strong>. Access the vSphere DRS section under Services<\/strong> and set DRS Automation<\/strong> to Manual<\/strong>\u00a0with a Migration Threshold<\/strong>\u00a0set to Conservative<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n Double check the vSphere DRS has been set to Manual<\/strong> to safely begin the upgrade\/converge procedure.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If your PSC and vCSA appliances run a different vSphere version than 6.7 Update 1, both appliances must be upgraded to the correct version before running the Converge Tool. Keep in mind the PSC appliance must be upgraded first<\/strong> to avoid issues. Before proceeding make also sure the upgrade path is actually supported<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Check out the VMware Product Interoperability matrices<\/a>\u00a0to ensure your upgrade path is supported.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mount the ISO<\/strong> file downloaded from\u00a0VMware website<\/a>\u00a0and run the installer from the supported OSs (Windows, Linux, MacOS) by double clicking the\u00a0installer.exe<\/strong>\u00a0file.<\/p>\n From the Deploy appliance<\/strong> wizard, click\u00a0Upgrade<\/strong>\u00a0to begin Stage 1<\/em>.<\/p>\n Click Next<\/strong> to begin the upgrade procedure of the PSC and follow the instructions. The complete upgrade procedure guide<\/strong> can be found this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n The upgrade of the selected PSC is being performed.<\/p>\n When Stage 1<\/em> of the PSC upgrade process has been completed, click Continue<\/strong> to begin Stage 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n In\u00a0Stage 2<\/strong>\u00a0the PSC upgrade will be executed.<\/p>\n If during the upgrade process you face a similar error, make sure the upgrade path is supported<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When the PSC has been upgraded successfully click Close<\/strong> to exit the wizard. The PSC has been upgraded to version 6.7 Update 1.<\/p>\n Now\u00a0repeat same procedure<\/strong> for the vCSA.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The vCSA upgrade procedure follows same steps<\/strong> as we have seen for the PSC. Mount the ISO<\/strong> file downloaded from\u00a0VMware website<\/a>\u00a0and run the\u00a0installer.exe<\/em>\u00a0file to proceed.<\/p>\n Also for this procedure, select the\u00a0Upgrade<\/strong>\u00a0option from the vCenter Server Appliance Installer to begin the upgrade of the vCSA.\u00a0Check out this article<\/a> for step-by-step vCSA upgrade.<\/p>\n Completed Stage 1, click Continue<\/strong> to begin Stage 2.<\/p>\n In\u00a0Stage 2<\/strong>\u00a0the vCenter Server upgrade will be executed.<\/p>\n Stage 2 of vCenter upgrade is being performed.<\/p>\n When the upgrade has been completed successfully, click Close<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n The environment is now ready<\/strong> to proceed with the converge process.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before proceeding with the converge procedure, make sure that vCenter Server and at least one PSC<\/strong> of the vSphere SSO domain have a valid backup in order to restore them in case something goes horribly wrong.<\/p>\n Ensure that both PSC and vCSA are running vSphere 6.7 Update 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n From the mounted vCSA 6.7 Update 1 ISO, access the vcsa-converge-cli<\/strong> folder.<\/p>\n Navigate to \\vcsa-converge-cli\\templates\\converge<\/em> folder and copy the\u00a0converge.json<\/strong>\u00a0file to your computer.<\/p>\n Edit the converge.json<\/em> file and fill the required information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before proceeding, make sure your computer has\u00a0network access<\/strong> to both PSC and vCenter Server.<\/p>\n Access the vCenter Management Appliance and go to\u00a0Summary<\/strong> tab. Note the appliance Type<\/strong> is specified as\u00a0vCenter Server with an external Platform Services Controller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If Windows is the operating system used in your computer, open the Command Prompt<\/strong> and navigate to the folder\u00a0\\vcsa-converge-cli\\win32<\/em>.<\/p>\n Run the following command to begin the converge process:<\/p>\n The converge process is being executed.<\/p>\n When the procedure has been completed, type y<\/strong> to reboot the appliance. After rebooting the vCSA, the converge process has been completed.<\/p>\n Access once again the vCenter Management Appliance and go to\u00a0Summary<\/strong> tab. Note the appliance Type<\/strong> is now specified as\u00a0vCenter Server with an embedded Platform Services Controller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If in your network there are services that\u00a0use the PSC for authentication, they must be re-registered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before proceeding with PSC decommission, make sure that all vCSA registered<\/strong> have been converged.<\/p>\n From the mounted vCSA 6.7 Update 1 ISO, navigate to the folder\u00a0\\vcsa-converge-cli\\templates\\decommission<\/em>\u00a0and copy the\u00a0decommission_psc.json<\/strong>\u00a0file to your computer.<\/p>\n Edit the decommission_psc.json<\/em>\u00a0file and fill the required information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Open the Command Prompt<\/strong> and navigate to \\vcsa-converge-cli\\win32<\/em> folder in the mounted vCSA 6.7 Update 1 ISO.<\/p>\n Run the following command using the Converege Tool to begin the decommissioning process:<\/p>\n The process is being executed. The tool checks if unconverged vCSAs are still registered<\/strong> to the PSC (the process will fail if any is found) then removes the PSC from the SSO domain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When Successfully decommisioned the PSC node<\/strong> message is displayed, the decommissioning procedure has been completed successfully.
