{"id":36904,"date":"2019-02-12T09:00:35","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T08:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=36904"},"modified":"2023-07-16T11:30:30","modified_gmt":"2023-07-16T09:30:30","slug":"vcenter-server-6-7-converge-tool-embed-external-psc-into-vcsa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vcenter-server-6-7-converge-tool-embed-external-psc-into-vcsa\/","title":{"rendered":"vCenter Server 6.7 Converge Tool: converge an external PSC into vCSA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37309 size-full\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-01.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vsphere-6-7-update-1-whats-new-and-upgrade\/\">vCenter Server 6.7 Update 1<\/a> provides the Converge Tool a great tool to converge an external PSC into the vCSA in a straighforward and completely automated way.<\/p>\n<p>With the release of vSphere 6.7 Update 1, VMware has <strong>deprecated the topology model<\/strong> of the vCenter Server with an external PSC in favour of the <strong>embedded topology<\/strong> instead.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Previously the use of an external PSC was required to <strong>support the Enhanced Linked Mode<\/strong> (ELM) but this deployment model is no longer needed with vSphere 6.7. Latest release supports <strong>ELM also in an embedded topology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37311 size-full\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-02.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-02\" width=\"537\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Converge Tool can be executed in\u00a0<strong>Windows, Linux and Mac<\/strong> OSs. In the vCSA 6.7 Update 1 .ISO file, the\u00a0<strong>vcsa-converge-cli<\/strong> folder includes three sub-folders (lin64, mac and win32) containing the tool for the supported operating systems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Prerequisites<\/h2>\n<p>Before proceeding with the procedure using the Converge Tool, keep in mind the <strong>following prerequisites<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The tool works <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vsphere-6-7-update-1-whats-new-and-upgrade\/\">only with vSphere 6.7 Update 1<\/a> therefore make sure your PSC and vCSA appliances have been <strong>upgraded accordingly<\/strong>. PSC is always the vSphere component that must be upgraded first.<\/li>\n<li>Only the <strong>vCSA is supported<\/strong>. Any Windows-based vCenter Server must be migrated to appliance first.<\/li>\n<li>Local OS users are not migrated.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-vcenter-high-availability-setup-pt-1\/\">VHCA<\/a> must be disabled if configured in your environment.<\/li>\n<li>To avoid the appliance is moved during the converge process, the <strong>DRS feature<\/strong> should be <strong>disabled or configured as manual<\/strong>\u00a0with the <strong>Migration Threshold<\/strong> set to <strong>Conservative<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Products installed in your environment that use PSC for authentication <strong>must be re-registered<\/strong> when the procedure has completed and <strong>before decommissioning<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Disable DRS feature<\/h2>\n<p>Before proceeding with converging external PSC and vCenter Server, the vSphere DRS feature in the vCenter must be <strong>disabled or set to manual<\/strong> to avoid issue with the vCSA during the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>From the vSphere Client, right click the cluster and select <strong>Settings<\/strong>. Access the vSphere DRS section under <strong>Services<\/strong> and set <strong>DRS Automation<\/strong> to <strong>Manual<\/strong>\u00a0with a <strong>Migration Threshold<\/strong>\u00a0set to <strong>Conservative<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37313 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-03-600x396.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Double check the vSphere DRS has been <strong>set to Manual<\/strong> to safely begin the upgrade\/converge procedure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37315 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-04-600x350.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Upgrade PSC and vCSA to vSphere 6.7 Update 1<\/h2>\n<p>If your PSC and vCSA appliances run a different vSphere version than 6.7 Update 1, both appliances must be upgraded to the correct version before running the Converge Tool. Keep in mind the PSC appliance must be <strong>upgraded first<\/strong> to avoid issues. Before proceeding make also sure the <strong>upgrade path is actually supported<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/resources\/compatibility\/sim\/interop_matrix.php#upgrade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMware Product Interoperability matrices<\/a>\u00a0to ensure your upgrade path is supported.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37317 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-05-600x436.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Upgrade the PSC<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Mount the ISO<\/strong> file downloaded from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.vmware.com\/web\/vmware\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMware website<\/a>\u00a0and run the installer from the supported OSs (Windows, Linux, MacOS) by double clicking the\u00a0<strong>installer.exe<\/strong>\u00a0file.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37319 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-06-600x487.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the <strong>Deploy appliance<\/strong> wizard, click\u00a0<strong>Upgrade<\/strong>\u00a0to begin <em>Stage 1<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37321 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-07-600x413.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-07\" width=\"600\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Next<\/strong> to begin the upgrade procedure of the PSC and follow the instructions. The complete <strong>upgrade procedure guide<\/strong> can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vsphere-6-7-upgrade-vcsa-6-5-to-6-7-pt-2\/\">this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37323 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-08-600x480.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-08\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The upgrade of the selected PSC is being performed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37325 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-09-600x139.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-09\" width=\"600\" height=\"139\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Stage 1<\/em> of the PSC upgrade process has been completed, click <strong>Continue<\/strong> to begin <em>Stage 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37327 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-10-600x201.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-10\" width=\"600\" height=\"201\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Stage 2<\/strong>\u00a0the PSC upgrade will be executed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37329 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-11-600x414.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-11\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If during the upgrade process you face a similar error, make sure the <strong>upgrade path is supported<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37331 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-12-600x386.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the PSC has been upgraded successfully click <strong>Close<\/strong> to exit the wizard. The PSC has been upgraded to version 6.7 Update 1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37333 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-13-600x355.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-13\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now\u00a0repeat <strong>same procedure<\/strong> for the vCSA.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Upgrade the vCSA<\/h4>\n<p>The vCSA upgrade procedure <strong>follows same steps<\/strong> as we have seen for the PSC. <strong>Mount the ISO<\/strong> file downloaded from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.vmware.com\/web\/vmware\/downloads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMware website<\/a>\u00a0and run the\u00a0<em>installer.exe<\/em>\u00a0file to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Also for this procedure, select the\u00a0<strong>Upgrade<\/strong>\u00a0option from the vCenter Server Appliance Installer to begin the upgrade of the vCSA.\u00a0Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vsphere-6-7-upgrade-vcsa-6-5-to-6-7-pt-2\/\">this article<\/a> for height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Completed Stage 1, click <strong>Continue<\/strong> to begin Stage 2.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37337 size-large\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-15\" width=\"600\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Stage 2<\/strong>\u00a0the vCenter Server upgrade will be executed.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-16-600x414.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-16\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stage 2 of vCenter upgrade is being performed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37341 size-large\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-17\" width=\"600\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the upgrade has been completed successfully, click <strong>Close<\/strong> to exit the height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>environment is now ready<\/strong> to proceed with the converge process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Converge external PSC and vCSA with Converge Tool<\/h2>\n<p>Before proceeding with the converge procedure, make sure that <strong>vCenter Server and at least one PSC<\/strong> of the vSphere SSO domain have a valid backup in order to restore them in case something goes horribly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure that both PSC and vCSA are <strong>running vSphere 6.7 Update 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configure the json template<\/h4>\n<p>From the mounted vCSA 6.7 Update 1 ISO, access the <strong>vcsa-converge-cli<\/strong> folder.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37345 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-19\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-19-600x409.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-19\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Navigate to <em>\\vcsa-converge-cli\\templates\\converge<\/em> folder and copy the\u00a0<strong>converge.json<\/strong>\u00a0file to your computer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37347 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-20\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-20-600x543.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-20\" width=\"600\" height=\"543\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edit the <em>converge.json<\/em> file and <strong>fill the required information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to fill the <strong>ad_domain_info<\/strong>\u00a0section if the PSC is joined to an AD domain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Replication<\/strong> section is not needed if you have just one PSC with no replication partners.<\/li>\n<li>If the passwords are not specified, during the converge process <strong>they will be prompted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre Note the appliance <strong>Type<\/strong> is specified as\u00a0<strong>vCenter Server with an external Platform Services Controller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37358 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-21\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-21-600x336.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-21\" width=\"600\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If Windows is the operating system used in your computer, open the <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong> and navigate to the folder\u00a0<em>\\vcsa-converge-cli\\win32<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Run the following command to begin the converge process:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"line-height:30 lang:default decode:true\">F:\\vcsa-converge-cli\\win32&gt;vcsa-util.exe converge --no-ssl-certificate-verification --backup-taken --verbose C:\\migration\\converge.json<\/pre>\n<p>The converge process is being executed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37360 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-22\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-22-600x241.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-22\" width=\"600\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the procedure has been completed, type <strong>y<\/strong> to reboot the appliance. The tool checks if <strong>unconverged vCSAs are still registered<\/strong> to the PSC (the process will fail if any is found) then removes the PSC from the <strong>SSO domain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37368 size-large\" title=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-26\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-26-600x204.jpg\" alt=\"vsphere-67-converge-external-psc-vcenter-26\" width=\"600\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Successfully decommisioned the PSC node<\/strong> message is displayed, the decommissioning procedure has been completed successfully.
