EMC Data Domain\u00a0Virtual Edition (DDVE) is the software-defined protection storage<\/strong> provided by EMC you can deploy and configure in a matter of minutes.<\/p>\n

The appliance can be deployed on\u00a0VMware ESXi 6.x,\u00a0Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 R2\/2016),\u00a0AWS<\/a> and Azure in commercial regions platforms and provides\u00a0up to 96TB capacity<\/strong>. EMC Data Domain Virtual Edition supports NFS, CIFS, DD Boost and BoostFS<\/strong> protocols.<\/p>\n

Based on storage capacity, the following level of resources are required for VMware and Hyper-V deployments (picture from DelleEMC.com<\/em>):<\/p>\n

Before proceeding with the deployment, download the\u00a0EMC Data Domain Virtual Edition<\/a>\u00a0appliance from DellEMC website.<\/p>\n

Deploy\u00a0EMC Data Domain Virtual Edition<\/h2>\n

From the vSphere Client, right click the vSphere object where to deploy the DDVE appliance and select Deploy OVF Template<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Click the Choose Files<\/strong>\u00a0button to select the .OVA file<\/strong>\u00a0downloaded from DellEMC website then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the Virtual machine name<\/strong> and the location to use then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-05\"<\/p>\n

Specify the compute resource and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-06\"<\/p>\n

Some advanced configuration options<\/strong> need to be set in vSphere. Take a look at required parameters then click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-07\"<\/p>\n

Accept the EULA then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-08\"<\/p>\n

Specify the Configuration<\/strong> to use based on your business requirements then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-09\"<\/p>\n

Select the virtual disk format<\/strong> to use and the storage<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>. For production environments the used storage should not be the same used to store the appliance or production VMs. Currently\u00a0RDM disks<\/strong> are not supported.<\/p>\n

Specify the Destination Network<\/strong>\u00a0to use and leave the IP allocation<\/strong> as Static - Manual<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to start the deployment.<\/p>\n

Configure DDVE<\/h2>\n

Right click the deployed VM and select Edit Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-13\"<\/p>\n

Click Add New Device<\/strong> and select Hard Disk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-14\"<\/p>\n

Specify the New Hard Disk<\/strong> size then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Right click the VM and select Power > Power On<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When the appliance has booted, check out the assigned IP address.<\/p>\n

Open your favorite browser and type the address https:\/\/<IP_Address_DDVE><\/span>. Enter the default credentials then click Login<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The license must be applied. Click the ...<\/strong> button and select the license file then click Apply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The configuration wizard is displayed and it is used to perform the initial configuration<\/strong> of the appliance.<\/p>\n

Network<\/h4>\n

To assign specific IP addresses to the appliance click Yes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Manually Configure<\/strong> option and fill the required fields. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"emc-data-domain-deploy-configure-21\"<\/p>\n

To assign a static IP address, set the DHCP<\/strong> value to No<\/strong> to one interface then enter the IP address to use. At least one interface must be configured to use the DHCP<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Manually<\/strong> from the Configure<\/strong> drop-down menu and specify DNS servers<\/strong> to use. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Submit<\/strong>\u00a0in the summary window to save the network configuration.<\/p>\n

The configuration has been updated. Click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

File System<\/h4>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to configure the file system for the hard disk previously added.<\/p>\n

Select the device then click Add to Tier<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

To determine if the device meets the performance recommendations<\/strong>, it is necessary to perform an assessment. You can run both\u00a0Using only Boost for backup<\/strong> and Using CIFS or NFS for backup<\/strong> assessment options to check your device.<\/p>\n

If the assigned resources can't satisfy the requirements, you get a warning. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

System Settings<\/h4>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to configure System Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In this section you can configure password and email address to receive alerts and notifications. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the Mail server<\/strong> use for sending outgoing emails and the Location<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

DD Boost Protocol<\/h4>\n

The EMC Data Domain Boost<\/strong> (DD Boost) protocol is used to enhance the backup performance<\/strong>\u00a0since it improves the interaction between the Backup Server and the Data Domain appliance.<\/p>\n

During the execution of a backup job,\u00a0the most common type of deduplication takes place in the backup repository<\/strong> - AKA\u00a0target-side deduplication<\/strong> - after data transfer. Data transferred to the backup repository create anyway an additional load to the network.<\/p>\n

Using the DD Boost instead, the deduplication process occurs at the client-side<\/strong> (Backup Server) - AKA\u00a0source-side deduplication<\/strong>\u00a0- improving backup performance and reducing bandwidth requirements since only deduplicated data are sent<\/strong> to the Data Domain appliance (Backup Repository) over the network.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to access the configuration panel.<\/p>\n

Assign a Storage Unit<\/strong> name and, from the\u00a0User<\/strong>\u00a0drop-down menu, select Create a new Local User<\/strong>\u00a0option\u00a0to create the account used by DD Boost. Enter a User<\/strong> name and Password<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the summary window click\u00a0Submit<\/strong> to create the user and enable DD Boost feature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

CIFS Protocols<\/h4>\n

If you need to configure the CIFS protocol, click Yes<\/strong> to access the configuration panel.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to access the configuration panel.<\/p>\n

Specify an Export Name<\/strong> then click on the green plus (+) icon<\/strong> to specify the access permissions.<\/p>\n

Enter the IP address of the Clients<\/strong> that need access to the NFS share and enable the required options. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

In the summary window click Submit<\/strong>\u00a0to save the configuration.<\/p>\n

The initial configuration is now complete and the Data Domain's\u00a0main dashboard<\/strong> is displayed.<\/p>\n

Ensure the appliance is time-synced<\/strong> with the network to avoid authentication issues.<\/p>\n

When the basic configuration has been completed, you can adjust all the configuration settings<\/strong> to meet the requirements and optimize the EMC Data Domain appliance.<\/p>\n
