You can configure EMC Data Domain<\/a> as Veeam backup repository to increase backup speed up to 50% taking advantage of EMC's DD Boost protocol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Leveraging on DD Boost protocol, backup jobs result faster since the deduplication process occurs at source-level<\/strong>\u00a0side optimizing bandwidth usage.<\/p>\n

Due to the nature of EMC Data Domain storage (high compression and deduplication ratios), read and random I\/O operations may result slow<\/strong>\u00a0since each block must be recomposed and decompressed.\u00a0For this reason EMC Data Domain storage should be used in the backup infrastructure as secondary backup<\/strong> repository for long term retention<\/strong>\u00a0purposes.<\/p>\n

If EMC Data Domain is used as main backup repository instead, Veeam recommends the use of Restore entire VM<\/strong>\u00a0and Restore VM files<\/strong> options for\u00a0faster recovery capabilities.<\/p>\n

Configure EMC Data Domain as Veeam backup repository<\/h2>\n

Access the Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> area and select the Backup Repositories<\/strong> section. Click Add Repository<\/strong> button to configure a new repository.<\/p>\n

Specify a Name<\/strong> and optionally a Description<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Deduplicating storage appliance<\/strong>\u00a0option and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Dell EMC Data Domain<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter the Data Domain server name<\/strong> and specify the credentials to access the appliance. You must use the account created during the <\/strong>DD Boost configuration<\/a> step in the EMC Data Domain appliance. Make sure the Data Domain appliance name can be resolved<\/strong>. The Gateway server<\/strong> is used by Veeam to communicate with EMC Data Domain since the Veeam Data Mover Service<\/strong> cannot be installed into EMC Data Domain storage. Click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Veeam establishes a connection with the EMC Data Domain appliance. Click Browse<\/strong> to select the Storage Unit<\/strong> to use created during the configuration of the storage, then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now click\u00a0Populate<\/strong> button to display Capacity<\/strong> and Free space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Advanced<\/strong> button to access available options. Leave default and click OK.<\/strong> Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Specify the server to use as Mount Server<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>. The Mount Server is used during VM guest OS files and application items restore<\/strong> improving performance and reducing the load on the network, useful especially over WAN.<\/p>\n

Click Apply<\/strong> to proceed with backup repository creation.<\/p>\n

When the process has been completed successfully, click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

Create a backup job<\/h2>\n

From Home<\/strong> area, access the Backup<\/strong> section and click Backup Job<\/strong> button. Select VMware vSphere<\/strong>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n

Specify a job Name<\/strong> and optionally a Description<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Add<\/strong> button and select VMs to protect then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As Backup repository<\/strong> select the EMC Data Domain repository previously created and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong>\u00a0to configure advanced settings as recommended for the used repository type. For example, in this step Inline-deduplication<\/strong> option is disabled (useless if use EMC Data Domain) to decrease load on the backup proxy.<\/p>\n

Since no application-aware processing<\/strong> is required for this backup job, click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Configure a Schedule<\/strong> then click Apply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Summary<\/strong> window, click Finish<\/strong> to save the backup job configuration.<\/p>\n

Right click the just configured backup job and select Start<\/strong> to execute the backup immediately.<\/p>\n

Veeam Backup & Replication configuration<\/h2>\n

To optimize performance, Veeam suggests the following configuration settings:<\/p>\n

Global options<\/h4>\n

You may consider\/evaluate to disable the Enable parallel processing<\/strong> option since it increases fragmentation in the backup files<\/strong> causing high random read during restore operations affecting negatively the performance.<\/p>\n

Job options<\/h4>\n

Enable inline data deduplication<\/strong>\u00a0should be disabled since EMC Data Domain has already valid deduplication and compression capabilities.<\/p>\n

Storage optimization<\/strong> set to Local target (16TB+ backup files)<\/strong>\u00a0improves Data Domain\u2019s deduplication process with better performance.<\/p>\n

Repository option<\/h4>\n

Decompress backup data block before storing<\/strong>\u00a0should be enabled to avoid high load and slow backup jobs.<\/p>\n

Use per-VM backup files<\/strong> should be enabled since improves writing and reading data from the EMC Data Domain appliance.<\/p>\n

Backup mode<\/h4>\n

The\u00a0Reverse Incremental<\/strong> backup mode (it generates high random I\/O) can't be used in a backup job if a DDBoost repository has been configured. An error message will be displayed.<\/p>\n
