{"id":38173,"date":"2019-03-27T09:00:43","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T08:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=38173"},"modified":"2020-03-21T14:41:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-21T13:41:00","slug":"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"Nakivo Policy-Based Data Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38183 size-full\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-01.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Policy-Based Data Protection is a feature introduced in <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-backup-replication-8-1-released\/\">version 8.1<\/a> of Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication that allows to <strong>automate VM backup and replication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Using this capability, VMs can be protected by <strong>defining one or more policy rules<\/strong> in the backup job. VMs matching defined criteria are <strong>automatically included in the backup job<\/strong> avoiding the boring and time-consuming process of editing backup jobs to add or remove a VM. Policy-Based Data Protection feature is very useful expecially in <strong>large environment<\/strong> with plenty of VMs to manage.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You can create <strong>up to 50 policy rules per job<\/strong> and several criteria can be chosen to define the requested policy.<\/p>\n<p>If multiple rules are added to the backup job, the <strong>AND<\/strong>\/<strong>OR<\/strong> logical conditions can be used to define the policy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AND<\/strong> - VMs are added to the backup job if all rules are matched<\/li>\n<li><strong>OR<\/strong> - items are added to the job if any rule is matched<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To define the filter for the backup job, there are <strong>up to nine options<\/strong> available for VMware, Hyper-V and Amazon EC2 backup jobs and <strong>at least 3 characters<\/strong> must be included in the search criteria.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38186 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-02-600x170.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>available Search criteria<\/strong> are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>VM name<\/strong> - the search is performed by selecting VMs where the name contains the characters defined<\/li>\n<li><strong>VM tag<\/strong> - tags defined in vSphere and associated to VMs are used to add VMs to the policy-based job<\/li>\n<li><strong>VM location<\/strong> - VMs located in the same datacenter, VM folder, host, or cluster are added to the job<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name of datastore<\/strong> - VMs are included in the job if located or not located on the datastores specified by the policy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name of VM network<\/strong> - select VMs connected to virtual networks specified by the policy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size of VM<\/strong> - VMs are selected based on VMs size<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amount of VM RAM<\/strong> - VMs are added to the job if they match the appropriate amount of VM memory specified by the policy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Number of VM CPU sockets<\/strong> - VMs are added to the job if they have the appropriate number of CPU sockets<\/li>\n<li><strong>VM power state<\/strong> - VMs are added to the job depending on their current power state<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Create a Policy-Based Data Protection backup job<\/h2>\n<p>Fram Nakivo's dashboard click on <strong>Create<\/strong> menu and select <strong>VMware vSphere backup job<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38188 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-03-600x569.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>View<\/strong> drop-down menu select <strong>Policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38226 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-04-600x437.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Condition<\/strong> to define if the VMs must match any rule or all rules defined in the <strong>Search by<\/strong> field. In the example the <strong>Include items if ANY rule is matched<\/strong> (OR) condition and the <strong>VM tag<\/strong> have been selected.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38192 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-05-600x353.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"353\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>VM tag<\/strong> is the tag specified in the VM's <strong>Summary<\/strong> in vSphere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38194 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-06-600x314.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enter the <strong>tag name to use<\/strong> (Office 365 in the example). Remember at least 3 characters must be included in the search criteria. Click <strong>Add another rule<\/strong> to specify an additional search criteria.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38204 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-07-600x353.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-policy-based-data-protection-07\" width=\"600\" height=\"353\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the example the <strong>VM name<\/strong> that <strong>Contains<\/strong> the word <em>adfs<\/em> has been specified as search criteria. As you can notice only <strong>part of the VM name<\/strong> has been entered to display the VMs that match the first or the second rule. Therefore only VMs with tag <em>Office 365<\/em> or with <em>adfs<\/em> included in the VM name are included in the backup job.
