Keep in mind the only way to efficiently protect your business leverages in a <strong>strong backup infrastructure<\/strong> design.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Amazon S3 Object Lock<\/h2>\n<p>Veeam Cloud Tier - Immutability feature leverages a new capability provided by AWS to enforce security: the <strong>Amazon S3 Object Lock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon S3 Object Lock is <strong>based on WORM<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Write_once_read_many\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Write Once Read Many<\/a>) model and prevents stored objects from being <strong>deleted or overwritten<\/strong> for a specified amount of time (retention). This feature add an <strong>extra layer of security<\/strong> against object changes and deletion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40930 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-02-600x300.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To protect stored objects, <strong>two retention modes<\/strong> are provided by Amazon S3 Object Lock:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Governance mode<\/strong> - also this capability prevents an object version from being overwritten or deleted, but protection <strong>doesn't have a retention period<\/strong> and can be removed anytime by any user with <strong>s3:PutObjectLegalHold<\/strong> permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"itemizedlist\">\n<ul class=\"itemizedlist\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"listitem\"><strong>Compliance mode<\/strong> - data stored with this retention can't be overwritten or deleted by <strong>any user including the root account<\/strong> in AWS. There is no way to change the retention mode or to shortener the retention period. This model ensure the protected object version availability and integrity for the duration of the retention period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Create a new S3 Bucket<\/h4>\n<p>To store backups in AWS S3 a new bucket must be created. Login to the AWS console and access the <strong>S3<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40932 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-03-600x500.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Create Bucket<\/strong> to create a new bucket that will be used to protect backup data.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40934 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-04-600x302.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Bucket name<\/strong> and <strong>Region<\/strong> then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40936 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-05-600x352.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under <strong>Versioning<\/strong> enable <strong>Keep all versions of an object in the same bucket<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40939 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-06-600x352.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down the window to display <strong>Object Lock<\/strong> section. Enable <strong>Make recent backups immutable for x days<\/strong> to use native object storage capabilities and specify the retention in days. Define the time\/age when old <strong>backups can be moved<\/strong> to the object storage for long-retention archival purposes. This value is set as <strong>30 days<\/strong>\u00a0by default. You have also the option\u00a0<strong>Encrypt data uploaded to object storage<\/strong>\u00a0to enforce security. Click\u00a0<strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40997 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-31\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-31-600x425.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-31\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<strong>Finish<\/strong>\u00a0to create the Scale-out Repository.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40999 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-32\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-32-600x425.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-32\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The created Scale-out Repository.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41001 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-33\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-33-600x304.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-33\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Create a Backup Job<\/h2>\n<p>Create a new Backup Job to take advantage of the Immutability feature. In the configuration wizard select from the <strong>Backup repository<\/strong> drop-down menu the just created Scale-out Repository and click <strong>Next<\/strong>. Just follow the instructions and finalize the Backup Job configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41003 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-34\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-34-600x425.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-34\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the configuration has been saved, right click the created Backup Job and select <strong>Start<\/strong> to start the backup immediately.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41005 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-35\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-35-600x442.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-35\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the first execution, a <strong>Full Backup<\/strong> is being performed.<\/p>\n<p>If you are willing to\u00a0<strong>test the archival process<\/strong> to the protected bucket, after the initial Full Backup you should perform some additional backups. At least <strong>three additional Incremental Backups<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>another Active Full\u00a0Backup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41007 size-large\" title=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-36\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-36-600x398.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-10-cloud-tier-immutability-36\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Move backups to the Cloud Tier Immutability<\/h2>\n<p>To\u00a0<strong>move backups immediately<\/strong> to the selected Object Storage (S3), access the\u00a0<strong>Backup Infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0area and expand the\u00a0<strong>Scale-out Repositories<\/strong> section.
