{"id":43274,"date":"2020-03-24T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T08:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=43274"},"modified":"2023-08-20T14:57:29","modified_gmt":"2023-08-20T12:57:29","slug":"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new\/","title":{"rendered":"VMware vCenter Server 7 what's new"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43298 size-full\" title=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-01.jpg\" alt=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the release of vSphere 7, VMware introduces some new features in vCenter Server <strong>improving functionality, performance<\/strong> with a <strong>simplified management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The new version introduces also the <strong>VM Hardware 17<\/strong> with two new features:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Watchdog Timer<\/strong> - when the guest OS stops responding, the virtual machine is reset<\/li>\n<li><strong>Precision Clock<\/strong> - sub millisecond time accuracy for the virtual machine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What's new in vCenter Server 7<\/h2>\n<p>Some of the new features provided with version 7.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>vCenter Server Profiles<\/h4>\n<p>vCenter Server Profiles is a new feature that allows administrators to <strong>export existing vCenter configurations<\/strong> from one node and <strong>import them in another vCenter<\/strong>.\u00a0vCenter Server Profiles consists in four RestAPIs administrators can execute to obtain the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>List<\/strong> - list the configurations that can be exported or imported<\/li>\n<li><strong>Export<\/strong> - export the configuration as json file<\/li>\n<li><strong>Validate<\/strong> - validates the configuration changes against the target vCenter Server<\/li>\n<li><strong>Import<\/strong> - the desired configuration changes are imported into the target vCenter Server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The procedure via these APIs <strong>doesn't require a reboot<\/strong> of the vCenter Server.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43300 size-large\" title=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-02-600x315.jpg\" alt=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Update Planner<\/h4>\n<p>Update Planner is used to update the vCenter Server without the hassle of checking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/resources\/compatibility\/search.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HCL<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/resources\/compatibility\/sim\/interop_matrix.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interoperability Matrices<\/a>. It automatically checks if the <strong>new vCenter version is compatible<\/strong> with the VMware components integrated with the vCenter Server. Updates and patches are <strong>managed from the same interface<\/strong> simplifying lifecycle operations.<\/p>\n<p>Update Planner provides the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Notification<\/strong> when an update is available<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-Upgrade check<\/strong> to check for issues before upgrading<\/li>\n<li><strong>What-if<\/strong> scenario if an upgrade is performed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43302 size-large\" title=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-03-600x342.jpg\" alt=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>New DRS<\/h4>\n<p>In vCenter Server 7 the DRS now <strong>runs every minute<\/strong> (previously the DRS was processed every 5 minutes) and the algorithm is now based on <strong>VM DRS score<\/strong>. The VM DRS score indicates the efficiency of the virtual machine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Values closer to 0%<\/strong> - indicates resource contention<\/li>\n<li><strong>Values closer to 100%<\/strong>\u00a0- indicates no resource contention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on the new functionality, DRS will move the VM to another host only if the VM efficency is improved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43304 size-large\" title=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-04-600x293.jpg\" alt=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Simultaneously Upgrade and Converge<\/h4>\n<p>Since external <strong>PSC topology is deprecated<\/strong> during the upgrade of the vCenter Server with an external PSC, the procedure will upgrade and <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vcenter-server-6-7-converge-tool-embed-external-psc-into-vcsa\/\">converge the external PSC<\/a> into the vCenter Server automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Converged PSCs must still be <strong>decommissioned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43306 size-large\" title=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-05-600x335.jpg\" alt=\"vmware-vcenter-server-7-whats-new-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>vCenter Server Multi-Homing<\/h4>\n<p>In version 7 multi-homing is supported in a single appliance. Keep in mind that in the new architecture <strong>NIC1 will be always reserved<\/strong> for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-vcenter-high-availability-setup-pt-1\/\">VCHA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>VM Template management<\/h4>\n<p>This new feature introduces the <strong>template versioning<\/strong> and can be used for templates stored in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/working-with-content-libraries-in-vsphere-6-5\/\">Content Libraries<\/a>.
