{"id":43426,"date":"2020-04-28T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T07:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=43426"},"modified":"2020-04-26T14:02:18","modified_gmt":"2020-04-26T12:02:18","slug":"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Veeam v10 NAS Backup support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43808 size-full\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-01.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the new features available in <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/upgrade-veeam-backup-replication-to-version-10\/\">Veeam Backup &amp; Replication 10<\/a> is the NAS Backup support that allows the protection of NAS devices regardless of their typology.<\/p>\n<p>The new feature leverages the <strong>Changed File Tracking<\/strong> functionality to perform fast incremental backups of unstructured data stored in NAS environments.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43810 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-02-600x397.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The NAS Backup feature supports the <strong>following protocols<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SMB v1, v2, v3<\/li>\n<li>NFS v3, v4.1<\/li>\n<li>Windows file server (the VSS snapshot is used to backup locked files)<\/li>\n<li>Linux file server<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Due to functional limitations, the <strong>NDMP<\/strong> protocol is not supported.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of the <strong>first Full Backup<\/strong>, all other <strong>backups are Incremental<\/strong> and a full periodic backup is no required since there is only one full backup avalable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Configure a File Share Server<\/h2>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-10-sneak-peek-cloud-tier-immutability\/\">Veeam Backup &amp; Replication 10<\/a> go to <strong>Inventory<\/strong> area then access <strong>File Share<\/strong> section. For<strong> managed Windows or Linux<\/strong> servers, the Transport component (data mover) is directly installed. Acting as <strong>data mover<\/strong>, the File Proxy <strong>reads data<\/strong> from the file share and move the backup data to the backup repository. Although a File Proxy is <strong>installed by default<\/strong> in v10, you can add another File Proxy to be used for a specific NAS Backup job or to <strong>improve performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For better performance the File Proxy should be <strong>placed close to the source data<\/strong> to protect.<\/p>\n<p>To add a File Proxy, access the <strong>Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> area. In the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> section it is possible to specify the <strong>Exclusion Mask<\/strong> to skip specific files from the backup (by default snapshot files - <em>.snapshot<\/em> and <em>~snapshot<\/em>\u00a0- are excluded from NAS backup).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43863 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-26\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-26-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-26\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Backup repository<\/strong> and the <strong>retention<\/strong>. There are two different repository options you can use to store data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Backup repository<\/strong> - used for <strong>short term retentions<\/strong> specified in <strong>days or months<\/strong>, it retains the most <strong>recent versions<\/strong> of each file storing the backup in a <strong>new format<\/strong> specific for NAS Backup. It supports all repositories supported by Veeam VBR (DAS, Scale-Out, SAN, NAS and Deduplication appliances).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archive repository<\/strong> - used for <strong>long term retentions<\/strong>, it retains <strong>older versions<\/strong> of files until the retention policy expires. It supports all repositories supported by Veeam VBR (DAS, Scale-Out, SAN, NAS, Deduplication appliances and Object Storage).\u00a0For this repository the use of <strong>Object Storage<\/strong> is the recommended option due to costs and a better protection against ransomware attacks (<a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-10-sneak-peek-cloud-tier-immutability\/\">object lock feature<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43865 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-27\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-27-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-27\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For redundancy you can also specify a <strong>Secondary repository<\/strong>. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43867 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-28\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-28-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-28\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the schedule for the backup and click <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43869 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-29\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-29-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-29\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Finish<\/strong> to save the Backup Job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43871 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-30\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-30-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-30\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Run the Backup<\/h2>\n<p>Right click the just created Backup Job and select <strong>Start<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43873 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-31\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-31-600x484.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-31\" width=\"600\" height=\"484\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The backup is being executed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43875 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-32\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-32-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-32\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After some minutes depending on the amount of data to backup, the backup job completes successfully.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43877 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-33\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-33-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-33\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Restore File Server data<\/h2>\n<p>The restore procedure is pretty simple and offers <strong>three restore options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Entire file share<\/h4>\n<p>This option allows to restore the entire file share. Right click the backup and select <strong>Restore &gt; Entire file share<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43879 size-full\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-34\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-34.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-34\" width=\"574\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select the desired <strong>Restore point<\/strong> and click <strong>Next<\/strong> to complete the restore wizard steps.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43881 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-35\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-35-600x427.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v10-nas-backup-support-35\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Rollback to a point in time<\/h4>\n<p>This option allows to restore all backed up folders to a specific point in time.
