To fulfill the 3-2-1 backup rule, Nakivo Backup and Replication<\/a> provides the support for cloud object storage<\/strong> in order to save backups in AWS S3.<\/p>\n

Feature already available from previous version, the overall procedure is pretty simple and requires just few minutes to be configured.<\/p>\n

Prepare the AWS S3 environment<\/h2>\n

Before saving Nakivo backups in AWS, you need to create the appropriate Bucket<\/strong> to configure the backup repository.<\/p>\n

Login to AWS<\/a> and click the link IAM<\/strong> under Security, Identity, & Compliance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Create the permissions Policy<\/h4>\n

We need to create a Policy to assign the required permissions<\/strong> to the Bucket used as backup repository.<\/p>\n

From the IAM dashboard, click Policies<\/strong> in the left pane.<\/p>\n

Click Create policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Review policy<\/strong> when done.<\/p>\n

Specify the Policy Name<\/strong> and optionally a Description<\/strong>. Click Create policy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The policy has been created successfully.<\/p>\n

Create a new User<\/h4>\n

Now access the Users<\/strong> section and click Add User<\/strong> to create the user needed to access the Bucket.<\/p>\n

Specify a User name<\/strong> and enable the Programmatic access<\/strong> option. Click Next: Permissions<\/strong> at the bottom right.<\/p>\n

Permissions are assigned later using a dedicated group we are going to create. Click Next: Tags<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Next: Review<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the Review<\/strong> page check your configuration then click Create user<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The user has been created successfully. Write down Access Key ID<\/strong> and Secret access key<\/strong> since they will be required during the Nakivo AWS repository configuration.<\/p>\n

Create a new Group<\/h4>\n

Access the Groups<\/strong> section and click Create New Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter a Group Name<\/strong> and click Next Step<\/strong>\u00a0at the bottom right.<\/p>\n

Select the policy previously created (use the Filter<\/strong> to easily find the policy) then click Next Step<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Create Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When the group has been created, select the group then click on the Group Actions<\/strong> drop-down menu. Select Add Users to Group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select the user to add to the group and click Add Users<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Create the Bucket<\/h4>\n

Final step is the creation of the Bucket used to store the backups. Click S3<\/strong> under Storage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Create Bucket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter the Bucket Name<\/strong> and specify the Region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click the just created group name to assign the ACL.<\/p>\n

Specify the user allowed to access the Bucket then click Save changes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Configure the AWS S3 repository<\/h2>\n

To configure the AWS S3 in Nakivo, you need first to add the AWS account to the Inventory. Access the Configuration > Inventory<\/strong> area and click Add New<\/strong>. Select AWS\/Wasabi account<\/a><\/strong> to specify the account needed to access the Bucket.<\/p>\n

Enter a Display Name<\/strong> then the Access key ID<\/strong> and the Secret access key<\/strong> noted during the creation of the AWS account. Click Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The AWS S3 account has been created.<\/p>\n

Now access the Repositories<\/strong> tab and click Add Backup Repository > Create new backup repository<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select Amazon S3<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter the Name<\/strong> for the repository, select the previously created AWS Account<\/strong>, AWS Region<\/strong> and the Bucket<\/strong> used to store the backups. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the requested options if any then click Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The AWS S3 object storage repository has been created successfully.<\/p>\n

Create the Backup Job<\/h2>\n

Once the repository has been created, it is now possible to create a new Backup Job to save the backups in AWS S3. From Nakivo's dashboard, select Create > VMware vSphere backup job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select the VMs to backup and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select the created AWS repository from the Destination<\/strong> drop-down menu. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the desired Schedule<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enter the Job name<\/strong> and required options.<\/p>\n

Click Finish & Run<\/strong> then select Run for all VMs > Run<\/strong> to run the backup immediately.<\/p>\n

The backup job is being executed.<\/p>\n

After some minutes, depending on the VMs to protect and the available bandwidth, the job completes successfully.<\/p>\n

Looking at the AWS repository<\/strong> in Nakivo, you can check the stored backups in the repository.<\/p>\n
