{"id":47166,"date":"2020-12-16T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T08:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=47166"},"modified":"2021-05-18T15:27:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T13:27:33","slug":"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps\/","title":{"rendered":"Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47211 size-full\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-01.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/altaro-vm-backup-8-13-whats-new\/\">Altaro<\/a> EndPoint Backup for MSPs is a <strong>multi-tenant management console<\/strong> where you can manage all your customers' backups centrally.<\/p>\n<p>This solution allows you to backup <strong>on-premises and roaming endpoints<\/strong>, such as workstations, PCs, desktops and laptops.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>To run Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs there are some <strong>hardware and software requirements<\/strong> to be met.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Hardware<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Altaro Endpoint Manager<\/strong> requires the following hardware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>x86-64 processor<\/li>\n<li>8 GB RAM<\/li>\n<li>1 GB HDD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Altaro Endpoint Agent<\/strong> requires the following hardware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>x86-64 processor<\/li>\n<li>2 GB RAM<\/li>\n<li>1 GB HDD (at least <strong>10% free disk space<\/strong> for live data volumes to process Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Software<\/h4>\n<p>Make sure the following <strong>software components<\/strong> are present in the server to install.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MS .NET Framework 4.7.2<\/li>\n<li>TLS 1.2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Antivirus exclusions<\/h4>\n<p data-identifyelement=\"462\">Make sure the following <strong>directories are excluded<\/strong> from antivirus or a file-scanning software:<\/p>\n<ul data-identifyelement=\"466\">\n<li data-identifyelement=\"467\"><em>C:\\ProgramData\\Altaro on the Altaro Endpoint Agent and the Altaro Endpoint Manager machines<\/em><\/li>\n<li data-identifyelement=\"470\"><em>C:\\Program Files\\Altaro on the Altaro Endpoint Agent and the Altaro Endpoint Manager machines<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Supported OSs<\/h2>\n<p>Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs is available for <strong>Windows platform only<\/strong> and can be installed in the following supported OSs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Altaro Endpoint Manager<\/strong>: Windows Server 2016, 2019<\/li>\n<li><strong>Altaro Endpoint Agent<\/strong>: Windows 7 SP1, 8.1, 10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are <strong>some caveats<\/strong> to consider for the Agent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be 64-bit<\/li>\n<li>Home Editions are not supported<\/li>\n<li>Only data from NTFS formatted disks are backed up<\/li>\n<li>Disks with deduplication and NTFS compression enabled are not supported<\/li>\n<li>Bitlocker volumes are supported<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Communication Ports<\/h2>\n<p>To allow the correct communication between Altaro components, you need to open the following <strong>ports in the firewall<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Altaro Endpoint Manager\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>443<\/strong> - communication with the Altaro Cloud Management Console<\/li>\n<li><strong>35482<\/strong> - required by the console UI<\/li>\n<li><strong>35483<\/strong> - required for Altaro Endpoint Agent connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Altaro Endpoint Agent\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>35481<\/strong> - required for the console UI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Licensing<\/h2>\n<p>Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs is licensed with a <strong>monthly fee<\/strong> based on<strong> usage<\/strong>, per endpoint, per month.\u00a0The subscription requires a minimum monthly <strong>starter pack of up to 10 endpoints<\/strong> and the number of protected endpoints can be scaled up or down per month.<\/p>\n<p>A premium <strong>24\/7 technical support<\/strong>\u00a0is included.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47213 size-large\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-02-600x200.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <strong>free edition<\/strong> for MSPs for <strong>up to 10 endpoints<\/strong> a month to use internally for their own organization (excluding the cost of cloud storage) is included in Altaro EndPoint Backup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs main features<\/h2>\n<h4>Backup<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Schedule<\/strong> - backups can be scheduled with RPO from <strong>1 to 24 hours<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>File-based backup<\/strong> - files and folders stored on customers' endpoints can be included in the backup using a <strong>selective inclusion<\/strong> excluding directories or filetypes through the use of wildcards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roaming endpoint backup without a VPN<\/strong> - backups for roaming user don't require a VPN and backup settings are defined through the creation of backup policies.<\/li>\n<li><b>Policy-driven protection<\/b> - retention, backup location, and RPO are defined with backup policies. To configure backup settings for a large group of endpoints you can use multiple backup policies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agents deployment<\/strong> - agents can be deployed using GPOs, remote monitoring and management tools or PowerShell scripts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Restore<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>File recovery<\/strong> - files and folders from a chosen endpoint can be restored to their original machine or your endpoint manager server.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Backup storage<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Security<\/strong> - backup data are <strong>deduplicated, compressed, encrypted AES-256,<\/strong> and stored in your <strong>Microsoft Azure storage accounts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CBT\/Deduplication<\/strong> - Altaro EndPoint Backup for MSPs uses CBT and Deduplication to optimize space and performance. These technologies ensure <strong>lower resource requirements<\/strong> in terms of bandwidth and storage volumes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Azure account<\/strong> - backups are saved in your Azure account and customers are charged for storage used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Backup management<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Multi-tenant management<\/b> - backups can be managed from the Altaro's cloud-based console that provides the management and monitoring across multiple sites through a single pane of glass.<\/li>\n<li><b>Disable endpoints that are at risk<\/b> - compromised or dismissed endpoints can be temporarily or permanently disabled to impede data backup access by the agent.<\/li>\n<li><b>Receive alerts<\/b> - automated email alerts is available to notify administrators about the number of approved endpoints and successful or failed backup operations per customer.<\/li>\n<li><b>Hassle-free monthly billing<\/b> - through the monthly itemized invoice you know exactly what you need to charge your customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Getting started with the Altaro Endpoint Manager<\/h2>\n<p>To implement the Altaro solution, there are <strong>some steps to follow<\/strong> to complete\u00a0the configuration:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The first step is the <strong>installation of the Altaro Endpoint Manager<\/strong> in VMs or servers running Windows Server 2016 or 2019. This component stores all configurations and backup policies set up in the CMC for customers\u2019 roaming and on-premises.<\/li>\n<li>Once installed, the Altaro Endpoint Manager must be <strong>connected to the CMC<\/strong> to provide a single pane of glass to perform all required configurations.<\/li>\n<li>Configure the <strong>location<\/strong> to store backups data.<\/li>\n<li>Create a <strong>Backup Policy<\/strong> to define the configuration for a specific backup.<\/li>\n<li>Install the <strong>Endpoint Agent<\/strong> in devices to protect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>1. Configure locations<\/h4>\n<p>To provide backup <strong>storage location<\/strong> for customers, MSPs need to configure and manage their Azure Cloud Storage Accounts. Although <strong>Azure General Purpose v1 Storage Account<\/strong> should suffice for most use cases, <strong>higher tiers<\/strong> can be used to obtain faster recovery speed if needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encryption or geo-replication<\/strong> features can be added to Azure storage to improve security and to ensure multiple backups copies are available in the event of an <strong>Azure site outage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the Azure Cloud Storage Account is configured and registered to the Altaro EndPoint Backup, the service can be used as a backup location.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47298 size-large\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20-600x361.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20\" width=\"600\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>4. Create a Backup Policy<\/h4>\n<p>Backup policies are used to <strong>manage backup options<\/strong>. A Backup Policy includes the configuration required to protect selected clients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>user directories and file types to include<\/li>\n<li>Azure Cloud Storage Account to use<\/li>\n<li>RPO (from 1 to 42 hours)<\/li>\n<li>backup schedule<\/li>\n<li>backup retention<\/li>\n<li>network bandwidth throttling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47376 size-large\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20a\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20a-600x259.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-20a\" width=\"600\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>5. Install Endpoint Agent<\/h4>\n<p>To <strong>protect devices<\/strong> with Altaro EndPoint Backup you need to install an Agent to all PCs to backup Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 (x64 only).<\/p>\n<p>Run the installer, accept the EULA and click <strong>Install<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47301 size-full\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-22\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-22.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-22\" width=\"496\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Agent is being installed in the client.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47303 size-full\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-23\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-23.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-23\" width=\"496\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the Agent has been installed successfully, click <strong>Launch<\/strong> to run the registration procedure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47305 size-full\" title=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-24\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-24.jpg\" alt=\"altaro-endpoint-backup-for-msps-24\" width=\"496\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since the Agent needs to be linked to the Altaro Endpoint Manager, the browser automatically opens at the address <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">https:\/\/localhost:35481<\/span>\u00a0once the Agent is launched for the first time.
