{"id":48508,"date":"2021-04-22T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T07:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=48508"},"modified":"2026-04-29T17:18:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T15:18:24","slug":"vmware-horizon-fix-for-ad-user-or-group-not-found-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-horizon-fix-for-ad-user-or-group-not-found-error\/","title":{"rendered":"VMware Horizon: fix for \"AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND\" error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48513 size-full\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-01.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you try to access the <strong>Users and Groups &gt; Remote Access<\/strong> section in <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-horizon-7-deploy-unified-access-gateway\/\">VMware Horizon<\/a> you receive the error \"<em>AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>This error doesn't display current entitled users and it is due to a <strong>user or group not found<\/strong> in your Connection Server.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48515 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-02-600x304.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before proceeding with the fix, it is strongly recommended to <strong>take a snapshot<\/strong> of the Connection Server.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Fix the AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND error<\/h2>\n<p>To troubleshoot this error, first you must <strong>take a look at the logs<\/strong> located in <em>C:\\ProgramData\\VMware\\VDM\\logs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Open the last <em>debug-xxx-xx-xx-xxxxxx.txt<\/em> file and find the <strong>AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND string<\/strong>. Once the string has been found, in the log look at the following entry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>id = UserOrGroup\/<em>xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/em><br \/>\ne.i. id = UserOrGroup\/Uy0xLTUtMjEtNDA1MzYwNDI1LTQxNzYwNjc5MDItMjQ5ODUxMDkyMy0yMTY4<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48517 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-03-600x350.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Copy the value after the <strong>id = UserOrGroup\/<\/strong> string that indicates the <strong>string format<\/strong> of the user or group SID.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48519 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-04-600x98.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"98\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using your preferred browser, enter the address\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmd5.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.cmd5.com\/<\/a> to access an online tool to <strong>convert a string-format security identifier (SID)<\/strong> into a valid, functional SID. Paste the previously copied string in the first field and click on the button to get the valid SID.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48521 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-05-600x208.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-05\" width=\"600\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the SID of the user or the group that is causing the <em>AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND<\/em> error and must be <strong>deleted from the ADAM database<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/vmware-horizon-7-12-installing-connection-server-pt-1\/\">Connection Server<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the Connection Server, open the <strong>ADSI Edit tool<\/strong>, right click <strong>ADSI Edit<\/strong> and select <strong>Connect to<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48523 size-full\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-06.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Connection Settings<\/strong> windows enter the following parameters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the <strong>Select or type a Distinguished Name or Naming Context<\/strong> text box, enter <strong>DC=vdi, DC=vmware, DC=int<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Select or type a domain or server<\/strong> text box, type <strong>localhost:389<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click <strong>OK<\/strong>\u00a0when done.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48525 size-full\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-07.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-07\" width=\"380\" height=\"386\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Expand <strong>DC=vdi,dc=vmware,dc=int<\/strong> and select <strong>CN=ForeignSecurityPrincipals<\/strong> item. In the right pane <strong>search for the corresponding SID<\/strong> (in the example <em>CN=S-1-5-21-405360425-4176067902-2498510923-2168<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48527 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-08-600x267.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-08\" width=\"600\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the entry has been found, right click the <strong>CN value<\/strong> and select <strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48529 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-09\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-09-600x394.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-09\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48531 size-full\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-10.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-10\" width=\"335\" height=\"165\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now if you try to access the <strong>Remote Access<\/strong> area in your Connection Server, the configured users and groups are now displayed properly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48533 size-large\" title=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-11-600x287.jpg\" alt=\"horizon-fix-ad_user_or_group_not_found-error-11\" width=\"600\" height=\"287\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The problem has been fixed e the system functionality restored.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"signature\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"signature\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you try to access the Users and Groups &gt; Remote Access section in VMware Horizon you receive the error \"AD_USER_OR_GROUP_NOT_FOUND\".
