From the listed paths, select the partition configured in the Hardened Repository to store the backups. Keep in mind the retention specified in the Backup Job should be <strong>higher than the Immutability retention<\/strong>. Select <strong>Delete from disk<\/strong>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48787\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-37-600x466.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"466\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48789\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-38.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>As expected, the <strong>VM cannot be deleted<\/strong> due to the Immutability feature enabled for the specific job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48791\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-39.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"450\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Check the Immutability on the Repository<\/h2>\n<p>To have a look at how Veeam works with Immutability, login to the Linux Repository and navigate to the <strong>folder of the Backup Job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Run the following command to see the <strong>\"i\" attribute<\/strong> set to the backup files. This is the flag that makes the file immutable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># lsattr<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48793\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-40-600x118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"118\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>For a <strong>human friendly output<\/strong> run the same command with <em>-l<\/em> option at the end:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># lsattr -l<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-48795\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-41-600x118.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"118\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>As you can see all backup files are set as <strong>Immutable<\/strong>. Only the <strong>.VBM file doesn't have this attribute<\/strong> since it needs to be updated by Veeam during the backup sessions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Synthetic Full with Fast-Clone<\/h2>\n<p>If the XFS file system has been <strong>formatted enabling the Reflink option<\/strong>, during the Synthetic Full operation Veeam leverages the Fast-Clone technology optimizing space and performance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49352 size-large\" title=\"veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-42\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-42-600x439.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-configuration-42\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Secure the Hardeneded Repository<\/h2>\n<p>Once the configuration and backup tests have been completed, the Hardened Repository must be secured to avoid <strong>unauthorized accesses<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure <em>locveeam<\/em> user is not member of the <strong>sudo group<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Unplug<\/strong> the Remote Server Management system (iDRAC, iLO, etc.) from the network<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable SSH<\/strong> access to the repository<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To disable the SSH service in Ubuntu, from the console run the following commands:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># sudo systemctl disable ssh.service<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># sudo systemctl stop ssh.service<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/veeam-v11-hardened-repository-immutability-add-mfa-pt-3\/\">Part 3<\/a> will cover how to <strong>add MFA<\/strong> to SSH logins if the SSH service cannot be disabled for policy reasons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"signature\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"signature\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To protect backups against deletion, overwriting and ransomware, a Hardened Repository must be configured in Veeam v11 to take benefit of the Immutability feature.
