Stored backups are <strong>made immutable<\/strong> for a specific period of time <strong>set by the retention<\/strong> configured during the Backup Job creation. Stored backups cannot be altered, not even a superuser can do it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configuration<\/h4>\n<p>Make sure you are running latest Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication v10.5 to leverage the Hardened Virtual Appliance Immutability capability.<\/p>\n<p>From Nakivo dashboard, select from main menu <strong>Create &gt; VMware vSphere backup job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51284 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-10\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-10-600x455.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-10\" width=\"600\" height=\"455\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select VMs to backup then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51286 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-11\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-11-600x371.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-11\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select <strong>Onboard repository<\/strong> to take benefit of the Immutability feature. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51288 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-12\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-12-600x371.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-12\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Configure the desired <strong>Schedule<\/strong> and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51290 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-13-600x371.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-13\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Configure the <strong>Retention Settings<\/strong> for the current Backup Job as well as the <strong>Immutability<\/strong> with a correct value. For best protection, it is recommended to keep Backup and Immutability with the <strong>same retention value<\/strong>. Immutability <strong>should not be greater<\/strong> than backup retention to avoid errors since incremental backups cannot be injected into the full backup due to write protection given by the Immutability. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51292 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-14\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-14-600x371.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-14\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enter a <strong>Job name<\/strong> and click <strong>Finish &amp; Run<\/strong> to start the backup immediately.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51294 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-15-600x371.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-15\" width=\"600\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select <strong>Run for all VMs<\/strong> option then click <strong>Run<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51296 size-full\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-16\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-16.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-16\" width=\"379\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The backup is being executed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51298 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-17\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-17-600x278.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-17\" width=\"600\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After few minutes the backup completes successfully.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51300 size-large\" title=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-18\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-18-600x278.jpg\" alt=\"nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-18\" width=\"600\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Test Immutability<\/h4>\n<p>Once the backup has been completed, to test the Immutability, go to <strong>Settings &gt; Repositories<\/strong> and click the <strong>Onboard repository<\/strong>\u00a0link.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51302\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-19-600x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"295\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>A backup configured <strong>without Immutability<\/strong> leaves the option <strong>Delete<\/strong> enabled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51304\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-20-600x325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"325\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>If you try deleting the backup processed with Immutability, the delete option is <strong>greyed out and not available<\/strong>\u00a0instead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51306\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/nakivo-v10-5-vmware-monitoring-hardened-virtual-appliance-21-600x115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"115\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The VMware Monitoring and the Hardened Virtual Appliance features provided by version 10.5 are extremely useful to <strong>prevent performance issues<\/strong> and to <strong>protect backup data<\/strong> from deletion, overwriting and ransomware attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication v10.5 can be downloaded as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nakivo.com\/resources\/download\/trial-download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-day trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"signature\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"signature\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nakivo released the new Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication v10.5 introducing the new VMware Monitoring and Hardened Virtual Appliance features.
