Since Windows Server Core<\/a> is a stripped down version<\/strong> that doesn't provide the graphical interface<\/strong>, the installation of VMware Tools can be tricky.<\/p>\n

In VMware vSphere, each Windows Server requires the installation of VMware Tools, especially if you have configured the VMXNET 3 adapter type<\/strong> as network adapter.<\/p>\n

Install VMware Tools in Windows Server Core<\/h2>\n

From the vSphere Client click the Install VMware Tools<\/strong> link. As you may notice, VMware Tools are not installed in the selected server.<\/p>\n

Click Mount<\/strong> to mount the installation CD in the Windows Server Core.<\/p>\n

From the Windows Core Server<\/a>, run the following commands to identify the letter of the installation CD<\/strong>. In the example the CD is identified with the letter D.<\/p>\n

C:\\> diskpart<\/span>
\nDISKPART> list vol<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the drive letter has been identified, exit from diskpart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

DISKPART> exit<\/span><\/p>\n

Type the CD drive letter to access the drive<\/strong>. Use the dir<\/em> command to display available files.<\/p>\n

Run the setup.exe file<\/strong> to install VMware Tools. This will launch the VMware Tools Setup wizard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The graphic VMware Tools Setup wizard is displayed. If you can't see the wizard just minimize the Command Prompt<\/strong> window. Click Next<\/strong>\u00a0to continue.<\/p>\n

Select the desired setup type then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

VMware Tools are being installed to the Windows Server Core.<\/p>\n

When the installation has been completed, click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to reboot the server.<\/p>\n

VMware Tools are now properly running in the Windows Server.<\/p>\n

With this simple procedure, VMware Tools can be easily installed to Windows Server Core versions. This procedure works for both 2016 and 2019<\/strong> Windows Server Core versions.<\/p>\n
