This may occur if you are performing for example full backups or a large volume of writes and reads tasks. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If an overwhelming use of resources is detected, Microsoft starts throttling to <strong>keep optimal performance<\/strong> of the service.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Error 429 too many requests<\/h2>\n<p>Looking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veeam.com\/backup-microsoft-office-365.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365<\/a> console, the backup job is <strong>trying to connect the organization<\/strong> but it takes ages and it doesn't move forward.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60480 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-02.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-02\" width=\"540\" height=\"96\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Analyzing the <strong>backup job log<\/strong>, it reports the following error:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>error 429 too many requests<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60482 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-03-600x91.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-03\" width=\"600\" height=\"91\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Microsoft throttling<\/h4>\n<p>When you receive such an error, it means that throttling is occurring in your system and it is due when a tenant receives a <strong>large number of requests<\/strong> from a specific application (Veeam Backup for example) and the <strong>threshold is exceeded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the threshold is exceeded, <strong>Microsoft limits the requests<\/strong> from the specific application for a <strong>period of time<\/strong>. When there are too many requests, Microsoft Graph returns <strong>HTTP status code 429<\/strong> and the requests fail. This is the reason for the <em>error 429 too many requests<\/em>\u00a0in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Change the\u00a0throttling threshold<\/h2>\n<p>The<em> error 429 too many requests<\/em> may occur especially during the <strong>initial full backup<\/strong> of your 365 tenant (Mailboxes, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive) when a large number of requests are received from the backup application.<\/p>\n<p>To allow a bigger amount of requests for a limited period of time, the <strong>change of the throttling settings<\/strong> is the solution you can adopt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Changing throttling settings<\/h4>\n<p>Login to your Microsoft 365 admin center and click on the <strong>? (help)<\/strong> symbol.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60484 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-04-600x252.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type <em>ews<\/em> and select <strong>EWS Throttling Policies Increase<\/strong> to access the correct section.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60486 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-05\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-05.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-05\" width=\"486\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Run Tests<\/strong> to check if the service is throttled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60488 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-06.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-06\" width=\"487\" height=\"498\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tests are being performed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60490 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-07\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-07.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-07\" width=\"432\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the tests confirm the service is throttled, you can change the <strong>Throttling Policy<\/strong> to allow the task (full backup for example) to complete.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-60492 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-08\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-08.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-m365-error-429-too-many-requests-08\" width=\"487\" height=\"463\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the desired <strong>Duration (Days)<\/strong> by selecting <strong>30, 60 or 90<\/strong> as values from the drop-down menu and thick the acknowledge warning.
