{"id":61194,"date":"2024-04-23T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T07:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/?p=61194"},"modified":"2024-04-23T09:40:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T07:40:20","slug":"veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql\/","title":{"rendered":"Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61212 size-full\" title=\"veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-01\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-01.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL is a backup tool for MS-SQL databases used to <strong>transfer Database and Transaction Log backups<\/strong> to Backup Repositories configured in <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-v12-1-update-build-12-1-1-56-released\/\">Veeam Backup &amp; Replication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Veeam Plugin leverages the native application-level backups of Microsoft SQL Server allowing to <strong>backup and restore individual MS-SQL databases<\/strong> with <strong>independent backup schedule<\/strong> for full, differential and log backups (SQL Agent Job required).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Prerequisites<\/h2>\n<p>Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL supports the <strong>following versions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supported Microsoft SQL Server versions: 2014 SP3, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft SQL Server Express is not supported.<\/li>\n<li>Windows Server Failover Clusters are supported.<\/li>\n<li>Always On Availability Groups, Always On Clusterless Availability Groups and Always On Failover Cluster Instances are supported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also required to install <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sql\/ssms\/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms?view=sql-server-ver16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SSMS v19.x<\/strong> must be installed if Veeam v12.1 is used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SSMS v18.x<\/strong> must be installed if an earlier version of Veeam is used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Install Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL<\/h2>\n<p>Copy from the <strong>Plugins<\/strong> folder located in the <strong>Veeam installer ISO file<\/strong>\u00a0the <em>VeeamPluginforMSSQL.exe<\/em> file to the SQL Server.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61214 size-full\" title=\"veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-02.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"455\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Run the installer. Click <strong>Next<\/strong> to begin the installation of the Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61216\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-03-600x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>I Accept<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61218\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-04-600x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The plugin is being installed in the SQL Server.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61220\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-05-600x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>When the installation has been completed, click <strong>Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61222\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-06-600x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When you open the <strong>Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio<\/strong>, you should find a <strong>new Veeam toolbar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61224\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-07-600x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"214\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Configure the plugin<\/h2>\n<p>Before using the Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL, a <strong>minimal configuration<\/strong> is required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configure the Backup Repository<\/h4>\n<p>Click on the <strong>gear icon<\/strong> to configure the Veeam Backup Repository to store the database backups.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61226\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"105\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Enter the <strong>Veeam Backup Server<\/strong> and specify the <strong>credentials<\/strong> to access the backup server (make sure the account has the <strong>permissions to access<\/strong> the repository). Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61234\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-12-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Configure the desired <strong>Retention<\/strong> and click <strong>Run<\/strong> to execute the Backup Job.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61236\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-13-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The selected database is being processed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61238\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-14-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Looking at the configured Veeam Server, the SQL Backup Job is running.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61240\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-15-600x324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"324\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>After a few seconds the backup completes successfully. Click <strong>Close<\/strong> to close the window.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61242\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-16-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>In the Veeam Backup Server a new <strong>Application Plug-ins<\/strong> group is now displayed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61244\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-17-600x318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"318\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The processed database is also available in the <strong>Backups &gt; Disk<\/strong> section.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61246\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-18-600x319.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this method doesn't provide the option to <strong>schedule the backup<\/strong> and the <strong>Edit<\/strong> option is greyed out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61248\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-19-600x373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"373\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Configure the Backup Job with SQL Agent<\/h2>\n<p>To <strong>schedule the Backup Job<\/strong> for both Database and Transaction Log, you need to configure the Veeam Plugin for Microsoft SQL job using the SQL Agent. Open the database backup configuration once again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configure Database backup<\/h4>\n<p>Specify the <strong>Databases<\/strong> to backup, <strong>Backup set name<\/strong> and select <strong>Full<\/strong> as <strong>Backup type<\/strong>. Specify the <strong>Databases<\/strong> to backup, <strong>Backup set name<\/strong> and select <strong>Log<\/strong> as <strong>Backup type<\/strong>. Right click the DB Backup Job and select <strong>Start Job at step<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61288\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-39.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"397\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The full backup is being executed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61290\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-40.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"243\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The Backup Job in <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-linux-hardened-repository-using-iscsi\/\">Veeam Backup &amp; Replication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61292\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-41-600x318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"318\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Once configured, both Database and Transaction Log Backup Jobs will be <strong>executed on schedule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Restore a database<\/h2>\n<p>From the Veeam toolbar, click the <strong>Restore database icon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61294\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-42.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"105\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Specify <strong>SQL server name<\/strong>, <strong>Instance<\/strong> and the <strong>Databases<\/strong> to restore (<em>MoviesCatalog<\/em> in the example). Select the <strong>Backup Job<\/strong> that contains the database to restore and select the <strong>restore point<\/strong> to use. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61296\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-43-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>If it is requested to restore the database at specific point in time, select option <strong>Restore to any point in time (requires transaction logs backup)<\/strong>. This option only works if we have Transaction Log backup configured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61298\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-44-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Enter the <strong>Database<\/strong> name to use and click <strong>Run<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-61300\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/veeam-plugin-for-microsoft-sql-45-600x454.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"454\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to proceed with the restore of the selected database.
