Despite being a cloud service, Microsoft is only responsible for <strong>providing and maintaining the infrastructure<\/strong>, not for protecting your data.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Blog series<\/h2>\n<p>Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v8 installation - pt.1<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-configuration-pt-2\/\">Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v8 configuration - pt.2<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-test-backup-pt-3\/\">Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v8 test backup - pt.3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What's new in version 8<\/h2>\n<p>Several enhancements have been introduced with version 8 but the <strong>key features<\/strong> are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Immutability<\/strong> - applicable to Object Storage, <span class=\"fontstyle0\">now also primary backup can be immutable in addition to backup copies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Backup Proxy<\/strong> - added support for OS Linux (Ubuntu and RedHat) proxies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proxy Pools<\/strong> - used to automatically balance resource consumption (CPUand RAM) as well as Microsoft 365 throttling. Click <strong>Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63706 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-13\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-13-600x467.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-13\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Open the console<\/h2>\n<p>Double click the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 icon to open the console. Click <strong>Connect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63708 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-14\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-14.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-14\" width=\"490\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Security<\/h2>\n<p>One of the new features is the <strong>MFA<\/strong> configuration for users and the <strong>auto logoff<\/strong>. To configure MFA go to <strong>Settings &gt; Manage Users &amp; Roles &gt; Users and Roles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63710 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-15\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-15.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-15\" width=\"598\" height=\"582\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MFA can be configured to <strong>single users only<\/strong> and not to groups. In Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 version 8 <strong><span class=\"Notes\">only the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Notes\">Veeam Backup Administrator<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"Notes\"> role is available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63712 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-16\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-16-600x483.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-16\" width=\"600\" height=\"483\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Backup Proxies<\/h2>\n<p>Another cool new feature is the <strong>added support for Linux OS<\/strong> to configure <strong>multiple Backup Proxies<\/strong> using either Linux or Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Access the <strong>Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> area and select <strong>Backup Proxies<\/strong>. Right click anywhere and select <strong>Add backup proxy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63714 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-17\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-17-600x478.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-17\" width=\"600\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configure a Linux Proxy<\/h4>\n<p>Select the <strong>OS platform<\/strong> to use for Backup Proxies. Currently the Linux support is restricted to <strong>Red Hat and Ubuntu only<\/strong>. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63716 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-18\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-18-600x472.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-18\" width=\"600\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Specify the DNS name or IP address for the <strong>Host<\/strong> and optionally a <strong>Description<\/strong>. In the example the system is configured to create a custom <strong>Account<\/strong> <em>locveeam<\/em> assigning the required permissions. Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63728 size-large\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-24\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-24-600x472.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-24\" width=\"600\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Backup Proxy with OS Ubuntu<\/h4>\n<p>As written in the manual, the <em>dotnet<\/em> package must <strong>added to the Ubuntu black list<\/strong>\u00a0to avoid unwanted automatic updates of the <em>dotnet<\/em> package that <strong>could cause issues<\/strong> in the Backup Proxy functionality. Create a new file in the folder <em>\/etc\/apt\/preferences.d\/<\/em> and enter the following lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Package: dotnet*<br \/>\nPing: origin \"\"<br \/>\nPin-Priority: -1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># sudo vi \/etc\/apt\/preferences.d\/dotnet<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63730 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-25\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-25.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-25\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your\u00a0<strong>local domain is .local<\/strong>, you need to amend the\u00a0<em>resolved.conf<\/em>\u00a0file to\u00a0<strong>fix an issue<\/strong>\u00a0with Linux Proxy with a\u00a0<strong>.local AD domain name<\/strong>. Edit the file and remove the hash from\u00a0<strong>DNS<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Domains<\/strong>\u00a0fields and add the correct settings (DNS must be space separated).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>DNS= x.x.x.x y.y.y.y<br \/>\nDomains= domain.local<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># sudo vi \/etc\/systemd\/resolved.conf<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63732 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-26\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-26.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-26\" width=\"600\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Restart the service.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># sudo systemctl restart systemd-resolved.service<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63734 size-full\" title=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-27\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-27.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-v8-installation-27\" width=\"600\" height=\"60\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resume the installation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the Ubuntu settings are configured, you can complete the Linux Backup Proxy creation.
