The Ceph Storage Cluster is a feature available on the Proxmox platform<\/a>, used to implement a software-defined storage<\/strong> solution.<\/p>\n

Ceph is an embedded feature in Proxmox and is completely free to use.<\/p>\n

Prerequisites<\/h2>\n

Before starting the installation of Ceph Storage Cluster<\/a>, you need to create a Proxmox cluster<\/strong> by adding the nodes required for your configuration.
\nThree is the minimum number<\/strong> of nodes to configure a working Proxmox cluster.<\/p>\n

If you don't have a Proxmox cluster available on your network, follow this procedure<\/a> to configure a new one.<\/p>\n

Create a Ceph Storage Cluster<\/h2>\n

To create a new storage cluster, you need to install Ceph on all nodes<\/strong> within the Proxmox<\/a> cluster. Using your preferred browser, login to the Proxmox nodes.<\/p>\n

Ensure that all nodes have the latest updates installed<\/strong>. Select the node you want to upgrade, then navigate to the Updates<\/strong> section. Click Refresh<\/strong>, and then click Upgrade<\/strong> to install the available updates for the selected node.<\/p>\n

Repeat same operation for all nodes within the Proxmox cluster.<\/p>\n

Install Ceph service<\/h4>\n

Before installing the Ceph service, make sure that each node in the Disks<\/strong> section can detect the disks<\/strong> you plan to assign to the Ceph Storage cluster. As a best practice, the disks used should be of the same size<\/strong> (100GB, 100GB, etc.) rather than different sizes (100GB, 50GB, etc.).<\/p>\n

Connect to node 1<\/em> and select the Proxmox cluster. Access the Ceph<\/strong> section and click Install Ceph<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Test the Ceph Storage Cluster<\/h2>\n

To verify if the Ceph Storage Cluster is working as expected, create a new VM and specify the new storage accordingly.<\/p>\n

The VM creation requires some settings to be configured. Type the VM Name<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The tab we need to focus on is the Disks<\/strong> tab. Select the datastore01<\/em> you just created as the Storage<\/strong> to use.<\/p>\n

Once created, the new VM is up and running where the virtual disks are stored in the datastore configured as Ceph Storage Cluster.<\/p>\n

The VM running on node 1<\/em> has its virtual disk stored on datastore01<\/em>.<\/p>\n

By checking the other nodes, you can verify that the VM has copies of its data distributed<\/strong> across datastore01<\/em> on the different nodes.<\/p>\n

If one node fails, the VM can remain operational<\/strong> by configuring High Availability<\/a> and leveraging the distributed copies in the Ceph Storage Cluster.<\/p>\n
