alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-01\" width=\"602\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Veeam SureBackup ensures that saved <strong>backups are not corrupted<\/strong> and that VMs can be <strong>successfully booted<\/strong>, but running SureBackup on a <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/configure-veeam-data-domain-retention-lock\/\">Deduplication Appliance<\/a> can be challenging due to the nature of deduplication storage.<\/p>\n<p>During the Veeam SureBackup operation, the <strong>VM verification may fail<\/strong> with the following error:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>OS did not boot in the allotted time<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"151\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65128 size-large\" title=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-02\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-02-600x486.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-02\" width=\"600\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"151\">When a VM is powered on for testing by a <strong data-start=\"42\" data-end=\"60\">SureBackup Job<\/strong>, it must complete the boot process and reach a stable state <strong>within a specific timeframe<\/strong>.\u00a0To verify stability, the system checks if the VM's <strong data-start=\"204\" data-end=\"218\">IP address<\/strong> is reported to the hypervisor using stabilization algorithms, such as <strong data-start=\"293\" data-end=\"316\">Stabilization by IP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"483\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">This value, set by default to <strong data-start=\"351\" data-end=\"366\">600 seconds<\/strong>, is specified in the <strong data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"417\">Maximum allowed boot time<\/strong> option within the <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"455\">Startup Options<\/strong> tab of the <strong data-start=\"467\" data-end=\"481\">Linked Job<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65108 size-full\" title=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-03\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-03.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-03\" width=\"400\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>SureBackup vs Deduplication Appliances<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"194\">SureBackup relies on <strong data-start=\"25\" data-end=\"59\">storage random I\/O performance<\/strong> to verify VMs. If a deduplication appliance is used as the <strong data-start=\"123\" data-end=\"152\">primary backup repository<\/strong>, you may experience performance issues.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"196\" data-end=\"525\">While deduplication appliances are optimized for <strong data-start=\"249\" data-end=\"280\">sequential write operations<\/strong>, they introduce <strong data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"315\">higher latency<\/strong> when performing <strong data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"358\">random read operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"196\" data-end=\"525\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65114 size-full\" title=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-04\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-04.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-04\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"196\" data-end=\"525\">During a SureBackup Job, if backups are stored on a dedupe storage, the <strong>process will be slow<\/strong> because <strong data-start=\"469\" data-end=\"502\">each block must be rehydrated<\/strong> as the VM powers on.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"527\" data-end=\"621\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">This is often the main reason for the error \"<em>OS did not boot in the allotted time<\/em>\".<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Workaround<\/h2>\n<p>Of course the suggestion is to <strong>avoid using deduplication appliances<\/strong>\u00a0as primary backup repository as it negatively <strong>impacts not only SureBackup<\/strong>\u00a0but also some other useful features such as <strong>Instant Recovery<\/strong> and <strong>FLR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase the <strong>Maximum allowed boot time<\/strong> value by adding 5 minutes or more. You may need to do some adjustments to find the correct value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_65116\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65116\" class=\"wp-image-65116 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-05.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-05\" width=\"400\" height=\"474\" title=\"\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-65116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-05<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to <strong>apply the recommended best practices<\/strong> to the deduplication appliances by following the Veeam's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veeam.com\/kb1745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB17545<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the adjustments are appropriated, the SureBackup will complete successfully.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-65135 size-large\" title=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-06\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-06-600x486.jpg\" alt=\"veeam-surebackup-on-deduplication-appliances-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that these workarounds <strong>may not fix the correct functionality<\/strong> of SureBackup if the deduplication storage has poor performance.<\/p>\n<p>Wherever possible, avoid using <strong>deduplication appliances as the primary repository<\/strong> to store backup data, as this can impact the ability to perform<strong> fast restores<\/strong> and leverage features like SureBackup and Instant Recovery effectively.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"signature\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/firma.jpg\" alt=\"signature\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veeam SureBackup ensures that saved backups are not corrupted and that VMs can be successfully booted, but running SureBackup on a Deduplication Appliance can be challenging due to the nature of deduplication storage.
