It's clear that a node replacement must be performed as soon as possible, especially if a hyperconverged system like a <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/proxmox-ve-configure-a-ceph-storage-cluster\/\">Ceph cluster<\/a> is in use since the node failure takes out not only vCPUs and RAM but <strong>also storage<\/strong>. In the example, the node <em>proxmox03<\/em> has failed and need to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68124\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-03-600x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Proxmox node replacement procedure<\/h2>\n<p>First step for the Proxmox node replacement procedure is to check the nodes available in the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># pvecm nodes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68126\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"160\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Remove OSDs<\/h4>\n<p>Check the OSDs to identify which disks are in a <strong>down status<\/strong>. In the example disks 4 and 5 must be removed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/shutdown-proxmox-cluster-with-ceph-storage\/\">Ceph cluster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: node from the <strong>crush map<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># ceph osd crush remove <em>proxmox03<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Remove mon<\/h4>\n<p>Remove the failed monitor from the Ceph cluster.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># ceph mon remove <em>proxmox03<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68134\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"50\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Edit the <em>\/etc\/pve\/ceph.conf<\/em> file and <strong>remove the mon<\/strong> references from <em>mon_host<\/em> and the further entry below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">mon_host= 10.10.201.30<br \/>\n[mon.proxmox03]<br \/>\npublic_addr = 10.10.201.30<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># vi \/etc\/pve\/ceph.conf<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68136\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"490\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Once the failed mon references have been removed, <strong>exit and save<\/strong> the <em>\/etc\/pve\/ceph.conf<\/em> file.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68138\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Edit the <em>\/etc\/pve\/priv\/authorized_keys<\/em> file and remove the key related to the failed node.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># vi \/etc\/pve\/priv\/authorized_keys<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68140\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Move orphaned VMs to another host<\/h4>\n<p>If some VMs not protected with HA were running on the failed node, they must be <strong>moved to another working host<\/strong> to allow the correct Proxmox node replacement operation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68142\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"275\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Identify the VM to remove (<em>145<\/em> in the example) and <strong>move the VM to another host<\/strong>\u00a0 in the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># cd \/etc\/pve\/nodes\/<em>proxmox03<\/em>\/qemu-server<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># ls<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># mv <strong>145<\/strong>.conf \/etc\/pve\/nodes\/<em>proxmox02<\/em>\/qemu-server\/<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68144\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-13-600x104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"104\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The VM has been properly moved to a working node of the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68146\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"414\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Remove the failed node from the cluster<\/h4>\n<p>When all VMs are moved away from the failed node, the <strong>node can be removed<\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/proxmox-configure-high-availability-ha\/\">Proxmox cluster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># pvecm delnode <em>proxmox03<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68148\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"90\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The node has been successfully removed from the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68150\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"294\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Also the <strong>Ceph Monitor and Manager<\/strong> configured on the failed node have been removed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68152\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-17-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ceph cluster is still working <\/strong>but of course runs in a degraded state due to the missing node.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68154\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-18-600x283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"283\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Add the new node<\/h2>\n<p>To proceed with the Proxmox node replacement, you need to deploy a new server with the <strong>same configuration as the existing hosts<\/strong> member of the Proxmox cluster.<\/p>\n<p>From the Proxom cluster, select <strong>Datacenter &gt; Cluster<\/strong> and click <strong>Join Information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68156\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-19-600x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"195\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Copy Information<\/strong> to copy the information required to join the cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68158\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-20-600x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"189\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Go to the new Proxmox server to add, select the node and go to the <strong>Cluster<\/strong> section. Click <strong>Join Cluster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68160\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-21-600x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"194\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Enter the <strong>Password<\/strong> of the root account and click <strong>Join '<em>cluster_name<\/em>'<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68162\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-22-600x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"222\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The node is being added to the Proxmox cluster.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68164\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-23-600x376.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"376\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The new node has been added successfully.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68166\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-24-600x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"226\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Check the cluster status.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"># pvecm status<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68168\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"560\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Install Ceph<\/h2>\n<p>Since the new node will be part also of the Ceph cluster, select the new node and go to <strong>Ceph<\/strong> section. Click <strong>Install Ceph<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68170\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/failed-proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster-26-600x316.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"316\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Select the <strong>Repository<\/strong> type and make sure you are installing <strong>squid (19.2)<\/strong> as <strong>Ceph version<\/strong>.
