To install Nakivo<\/a> on Hyper-V, you can choose either the supported Windows or Linux platforms based on your business requirements.<\/p>\n Installing Nakivo<\/a> on a Linux-based virtual machine (Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS in this example) allows you to save a Windows license<\/strong>, as the product provides the same features.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Login to your Hyper-V node and open the Hyper-V Manager<\/strong>. Right click the node name and select New > Virtual Machine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Type the virtual machine Name<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select Generation 2<\/strong> as the machine generation type.<\/p>\n Specify the Startup memory<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select the Connection<\/strong> to use for the virtual machine and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select Create a virtual disk<\/strong> and specify the desired Size<\/strong>. Modify the Name<\/strong> and Location<\/strong> if needed then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select Install an operating system from a bootable CD\/DVD-ROM<\/strong> option, click Browse<\/strong>, and select the desired Image file (.iso)<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Click Finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The VM is being created.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Right click the newly created VM and select Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the\u00a0Firmware<\/strong>\u00a0section, ensure the\u00a0DVD Drive<\/strong>\u00a0is at the top of the boot order list.<\/p>\n In the Security<\/strong> section, click Enable Secure Boot<\/strong> and select Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority<\/strong> as the Template<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the Processor<\/strong> section, specify the Number of virtual processors<\/strong> to assign to the machine.<\/p>\n If the configured network uses VLANs, go to the Network Adapter<\/strong> section, thick Enable virtual LAN identification<\/strong> option and specify the VLAN ID. Click OK<\/strong> to apply the configuration.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Power on the VM by right clicking it and selecting Start<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Right click the VM and select Connect<\/strong> to open the VM console.<\/p>\n The Ubuntu installation wizard will appear. Follow the prompts to complete the OS installation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When the OS installation is complete, click Reboot Now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n After the reboot, SSH the Linux VM and ensure all available updates are installed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n # sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n To improve performance and functionality, virtual machines running on Hyper-V require\u00a0Hyper-V Integration Services<\/strong>\u00a0to be installed.<\/p>\n Integration Services are built into modern versions<\/strong> of Ubuntu Server (since 12.04) and are typically enabled automatically. If needed, you can enable them via Hyper-V Manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n SSH the newly created virtual machine<\/strong> to proceed with the installation of Nakivo Backup & Replication<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Nakivo<\/a>\u00a0requires the\u00a0installation of some packages<\/strong>\u00a0on Linux.<\/p>\n # sudo apt install cifs-utils open-iscsi ntfs-3g tar<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Download the Nakivo installer<\/a> file using the wget<\/em> command. The installer will be downloaded to the \/tmp<\/em> folder.<\/p>\n # cd \/tmp<\/span> Make the file executable.<\/p>\n # chmod +x NAKIVO_Backup_Replication_v11.1.0.98634_Installer-TRIAL.sh<\/span><\/p>\n Run the installer. Select the\u00a0installer language<\/strong>\u00a0and press\u00a0Enter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n # sudo .\/NAKIVO_Backup_Replication_v11.1.0.98634_Installer-TRIAL.sh<\/span><\/p>\n Press the key\u00a0D<\/strong>\u00a0on your keyboard until you reach the\u00a0end of the EULA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Type\u00a01<\/strong>\u00a0then\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0to accept the EULA.<\/p>\n Select the Nakivo component to install<\/strong> (1<\/strong>\u00a0in the example).<\/p>\n The next step to install Nakivo on Hyper-V is to configure the Director settings<\/strong>. Unless you have specific requirements, the\u00a0default values are appropriate<\/strong>\u00a0for most environments.<\/p>\n Once installation completes, open a browser and navigate to https:\/\/<IP_Server_Nakivo>:4443<\/em><\/span>\u00a0to access the\u00a0login page<\/strong>. The first time you access Nakivo you will be asked to create an administrative account<\/strong>. Click\u00a0Create Account<\/strong>\u00a0when done.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Once you have logged into Nakivo, you must configure the platform you want to protect. In the Inventory<\/strong> area, click the + (plus) icon<\/strong> to add the environment to backup.<\/p>\n Select\u00a0Virtual<\/strong>\u00a0and click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Since we want to protect VMs running on Hyper-V, choose Microsoft Hyper-V host or cluster<\/strong>\u00a0then click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Enter the required configuration settings. For security best practices, use a\u00a0dedicated service account<\/strong>\u00a0(not the Administrator<\/em> account) to link the Hyper-V cluster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Create a Domain Account<\/strong> in Active Directory with a strong password. Add this account to the Local Administrator<\/strong> group on each Hyper-V cluster node.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It is possible that when attempting to add the Hyper-V cluster to Nakivo, you may receive an error<\/strong> similar to the one shown below.<\/p>\n Here are several potential causes<\/strong> for an error at this stage. Recommended troubleshooting steps include the following.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On each Hyper-V node, add the following registry key:<\/p>\n Key:<\/strong> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\System Open the Registry Editor<\/strong> and navigate to the key path. Right click System<\/strong> and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Name the key as LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy<\/strong> and set the Value data to 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Put the node in Pause<\/strong> then reboot.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Verify the current status of the WinRM listener<\/strong> on each Hyper-V node.<\/p>\n PS C:\\> winrm enumerate winrm\/config\/listener<\/span><\/p>\n If port\u00a05986\u00a0is not listed, you must enable WinRM over HTTPS. First,\u00a0generate a self-signed certificate<\/strong> on each node.<\/p>\n PS C:\\> $NewCert = New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName \"HOSTNAME<\/em>\" -CertStoreLocation Cert:\\LocalMachine\\My -NotAfter (Get-Date).AddYears(10)<\/span><\/p>\n You can verify the certificate in the Certificate Manager<\/strong> (certlm.msc<\/em>) under Personal > Certificates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Enable the WinRM listener<\/strong> on port 5986 using the certificate's thumbprint.<\/p>\n PS C:\\> $Thumbprint = $NewCert.Thumbprint<\/span> Verify the listener is active<\/strong> by running the check again. Now port 5986 should now appear.<\/p>\n PS C:\\> winrm enumerate winrm\/config\/listener<\/span><\/p>\n From the Nakivo Linux VM, test connectivity<\/strong> to the Hyper-V node on port 5986.<\/p>\n # nc -vz SERVER IP_ADDRESS<\/em> 5986<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Use the ping<\/em> command to verify DNS resolution from the Nakivo server.<\/p>\n # ping HOSTNAME_FQDN<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Return to the Nakivo console, enter the service account credentials, and click Finish<\/strong>. If the Hyper-V cluster fails to add when using its cluster IP or DNS name, try using the IP address or DNS name of an individual node instead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Hyper-V cluster is being added to the Inventory.<\/p>\n The process is completed successfully.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Navigate to the\u00a0Nodes<\/strong> section to view the configured Transporters. Note that Transporters are automatically installed<\/strong> on all Hyper-V nodes that are members of the cluster.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The final configuration step is to create a\u00a0Backup Repository<\/strong> where backups will be stored. This example adds a\u00a0Hardened Repository<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the Nodes<\/strong> section, click the + (plus)<\/strong> icon and select Installed service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Enter the Hostname or IP<\/strong> of the Backup Repository Transporter and assign a Node name<\/strong>. For security, set a Master password<\/strong> to secure communication with the Nakivo Server. Click Connect<\/strong>\u00a0to verify the connection.<\/p>\n Click Accept<\/strong> to accept the Certificate Thumbprint.<\/p>\n A success message confirms the connection. Click Add<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Transporter has now been successfully added to Nakivo.<\/p>\n Now navigate to Repositories<\/strong>, click the + (plus)<\/strong> icon and select Create new backup repository<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select Local Folder<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Enter a Name<\/strong> for the repository, select the previously added Assigned Transporter<\/strong>\u00a0and specify the correct Path to the local folder<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Click Finish<\/strong> to create the Repository. Keep in mind if you enable Encryption<\/strong> you will lose the Immutability<\/strong> capability.<\/p>\n The new Hardened Repository<\/a> has been successfully created in Nakivo.<\/p>\n Now the infrastructure is configured and you can proceed by creating the required Backup Jobs<\/strong> to protect the workloads running on the Hyper-V cluster.<\/p>\n Nakivo Backup & Replication<\/a> is available to download as 15-day trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n To install Nakivo on Hyper-V, you can choose either the supported Windows or Linux platforms based on your business requirements.
