Since a standard Full Restore may require an <strong>unacceptable amount of processing time<\/strong>, the Instant Recovery capability is essential.<!--more-->Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication v11.2 currently supports Instant Recovery (Flash Boot) for <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-v11-0-4-with-vsphere-9-support\/\">VMware vSphere<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/how-to-install-nakivo-on-hyper-v\/\">Microsoft Hyper-V<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/how-to-install-nakivo-on-proxmox\/\">Proxmox VE<\/a> virtual platforms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How Nakivo Instant Recovery works<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/nakivo-configure-boot-verification-for-vm-backups\/\">Flash Boot<\/a> is a feature provided by Nakivo Backup &amp; Replication that allows you to boot VMs directly from <strong>compressed and deduplicated backups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When you trigger a Flash Boot job, Nakivo Director automatically creates a <strong>diskless VM on your target host<\/strong>. Simultaneously, the Transporter exposes the VM disks within the Backup Repository as <strong>iSCSI targets<\/strong>, which the Director then mounts to the new VM.<\/p>\n<p>This entire <strong>process is fully automated<\/strong> and finishes in seconds, allowing the OS to start booting immediately. Once the VM is live, you can seamlessly transition it to your production environment using your hypervisor\u2019s <strong>native live migration tools<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69524\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-02-600x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"230\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How to perform an Instant Recovery with Flash Boot<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a mission-critical VM (<em>lx-wordpress06<\/em> in the example) that suddenly fails, it is crucial to <strong>restore the service quickly<\/strong> to limit downtime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69525\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-03-600x306.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"306\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>To proceed with the restore operation, ensure you have a <strong>working backup available<\/strong> for the VM you wish to recover.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69526\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-04-600x310.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"310\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>While a working backup allows administrators to recover the service, a <strong>full restore may exceed the expected RTO<\/strong>, impacting business operations. Fortunately by leveraging Nakivo's Flash Boot, the <strong>RTO is kept extremely low<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Configure the Flash Boot Job<\/h4>\n<p>To run Nakivo Instant Recovery, <strong>select the Backup Job<\/strong> containing the VM then select <strong>Recover &gt; Flash boot for Proxmox VE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69527\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-05-600x386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Select the <strong>VM to recover<\/strong> and the <strong>Recovery Point<\/strong> to use (the latest recovery point is selected by default). By navigating to the correct URL, you can verify the website is <strong>reachable and fully functional<\/strong>. Keep in mind that the VM is currently running directly from the Backup Repository.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69538\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-15-600x417.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Finalizing the Flash Boot operation<\/h2>\n<p>With Nakivo Instant Recovery, the VM and its services are restored in seconds. However, you must decide <strong>what to do with the data generated<\/strong> while the VM was running in Flash Boot mode. If the VM is simply powered off, <strong>changes are not retained<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You have two options to finalize the operation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Discard the VM<\/strong> - if changes do not need to be kept.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commit the changes<\/strong> - if new data must be retained for Production use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Discard the recovered VM<\/h4>\n<p>If you don't need to retain new data and simply <strong>want to stop the Flash Boot<\/strong> process, select the Flash Boot Job and click <strong>Discard VMs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69539\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-16-600x391.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Discard<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69540\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-17-600x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"226\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The machine is <strong>powered off<\/strong> and all changed are discarded.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69541\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-18-600x391.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The VM with the <em>_recovered<\/em> extension is removed from <a href=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/en\/proxmox-node-replacement-in-ceph-cluster\/\">Proxmox VE<\/a> leaving the <strong>source VM unaltered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-69542\" src=\"https:\/\/nolabnoparty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/recover-proxomx-vms-in-seconds-using-nakivo-instant-recovery-19-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Retain changes (commit to Production)<\/h4>\n<p>To ensure that changes made during the recovery period are not lost, you must <strong>move the data to production storage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Select the recovered VM in proxmox VE, navigate to the <strong>Hardware<\/strong> section and select <strong>Hard Disk<\/strong>.
