Installing Veeam Backup & Replication allows the administrators to have a complete backup and recovery<\/strong> options for the running virtual infrastructure.<\/p>\n

In addition to the infrastructure backup, including not only users data but also configurations and the full virtual machine, the feature to start virtual machines directly from the backup storage<\/strong> is key point to reduce the restore time and raise the disaster recovery concept to an higher level.<\/p>\n

Installing Veeam Backup & Replication<\/h2>\n

After launching the application, from Veeam main window click Backup & Replication install<\/strong> option to install the program.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to start the procedure.<\/p>\n

Accept the EULA then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Provide the license file<\/strong> to enable the full product (30 days trial license file). If no license is entered, the Free Edition mode<\/strong> will be activated. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Select features to be installed in the system then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

System performs a configuration check<\/strong> for any missing components or potential installation problems.<\/p>\n

Enter username and password of the account used to run Veeam service. It is strongly suggested to use a dedicated account<\/strong> for this task granting database owner rights<\/strong> on the SQL Server instance and Full Control<\/strong> permissions on the catalog folder. Select the SQL Server instance<\/strong> to create the Veeam database on. If the network doesn't have any SQL Server installed, a local SQL instance will be installed. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

If Veeam service account is not granted with correct permissions on SQL Server<\/strong>, a setup error will be notified during database creation.<\/p>\n

From SQL Server Studio Management<\/strong>, add the correct user account to Security > Logins<\/strong> panel to manage the database and try creating the Veeam database once again.<\/p>\n

Leave default settings then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To leave enough room in the system partition C:\\ for its functionality, a custom Root folder for NfsDatastore<\/strong> and VBRCatalog<\/strong>\u00a0can be set. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The wizard shows the configuration set. Click Install<\/strong> button to begin the installation.<\/p>\n

The ongoing Status<\/strong> is shown during the installation process.<\/p>\n

When setup has finished the installation, click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

Configure Veeam Backup & Replication<\/h2>\n

Launch the program from its program icon.<\/p>\n

First we need to add the vCenter server<\/strong> to the backup infrastructure in order to collect all the virtual machines installed in the network.<\/p>\n

Add vCenter Server<\/h4>\n

From main screen select Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> at the left bottom of the screen. Click Add Server<\/strong> button or right click the Managed servers<\/strong> item then select Add Server<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select VMware vSphere<\/strong> as server type to add the vCenter Server to the backup infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Type the DNS name or IP address<\/strong> of vCenter Server then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Specify the account used to access vCenter Server. These credentials will be stored in the Veeam database<\/strong> as Single Sign-On feature.<\/p>\n

The system detects<\/strong> the server type specified.<\/p>\n

Then the server configuration is saved to the system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to complete the procedure.<\/p>\n

Clicking on the added vCenter Server, all the managed ESXi hosts<\/strong> are listed in the right pane.<\/p>\n

Add Backup Proxy<\/h4>\n

Depending on your network configuration, to reduce the Veeam Server workload<\/strong>, the data handling process can be transferred to a dedicated server acting as Backup Proxy.<\/p>\n

Select Backup Proxy > Add Proxy<\/strong> button or right click Backup Proxies<\/strong> and select Add VMware Backup Proxy<\/strong> item.<\/p>\n

By default local server act as Proxy as well. To specify a new Backup Proxy, click the Add New<\/strong> button in the Choose server<\/strong> field.<\/p>\n

Specify DNS name or IP address<\/strong> of the Windows server used as proxy then click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Enter the account with local administrative rights on the added server. These credentials will be stored in the Veeam database<\/strong> as Single Sign-on feature.<\/p>\n

The process performs a system check<\/strong> for installed components.<\/p>\n

Because the specified server is a new component of the Backup Infrastructure, the Transport agent<\/strong> must be installed on the target host. Click Next<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n

Required components are then installed. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

The Summary<\/strong> window is shown. Click Finish<\/strong> to complete the procedure.<\/p>\n

The new Backup Proxy is now available to be set in the Choose server<\/strong> field. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To avoid network congestion<\/strong>, you can specify the bandwidth Backup Proxy will use during the backup process. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

The new Backup Proxy is now available in the Proxies list<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Add Backup Repositories<\/h4>\n

Because backup must be stored<\/strong> somewhere, it is necessary to configure the Backup Repository that Veeam will use as storage for its data.<\/p>\n

Type the backup Name<\/strong> and a Description<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Select the Repository Type<\/strong> Veeam will use to store the backup jobs. In the example a CIFS share<\/strong> will be used. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Type the Shared folder path<\/strong> specifying the Credentials<\/strong> to access the share and select the Proxying server<\/strong> used. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Click Populate<\/strong> button to check Capacity<\/strong> and Free space<\/strong> left in the selected storage.<\/p>\n

To improve performance, click Advanced<\/strong> button to specified additional features. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enable vPower NFS<\/strong> feature to allow advanced functionality (Instant VM Recovery, SureBackup, etc.). Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When the configuration is complete, the Review<\/strong> window is shown. Click Next<\/strong> to install the new Repository.<\/p>\n

The new Backup Repository is now listed<\/strong> in the Backup Repositories.<\/p>\n
