VM Storage Policies ensure the administrators\u00a0that virtual machines are placed to storage<\/strong> that guarantees a specific level of capacity, availability and performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formerly called VM Storage Profiles<\/strong>, in vSphere 5.5 they have been renamed to VM Storage Policies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enable VM Storage Policies<\/h2>\n

First thing to do is enabling the VM Storage Policies feature. Open your favorite browser and access vCenter Server using\u00a0vSphere Web Client<\/strong>. Go to Home<\/strong> and click VM Storage Policies<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n

Click the Enable VM storage policies per compute resource<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

To enable the feature for the current host\/cluster, click Enable<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Once enabled, you can recognize the new status in the VM Storage Policy Status<\/strong> field.<\/p>\n

Storage Policies have been now enabled for the cluster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Create a new tag<\/h2>\n

From vCenter Server, go to Datastore<\/strong> view and select the datastore you want to attach a storage policy to. To create the Storage Policy we need to create a Tag<\/strong>\u00a0by clicking the New tag<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Fill the Name<\/strong> and Description<\/strong>\u00a0tag fields then create a new category. Fill the requested category details and\u00a0select Datastore as Associable Object Type<\/strong>. Click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

Assign the new created tag to the datastore(s) you want to include in the storage policy. Right click the datastore(s) and select Assign Tag<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Click Yes<\/strong> to perform this action.<\/p>\n

Click Assign<\/strong>\u00a0button to tag the selected datastore(s).<\/p>\n

The tag is now assigned to your datastore(s).<\/p>\n

Create a new VM Storage Policy<\/h2>\n

From vSphere Web Client, go to Home<\/strong> and click the VM Storage Policies<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n

This time you need to click the Create a new VM storage policy<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Fill the details and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong>\u00a0to continue.<\/p>\n

Because no Rule-Set<\/strong>\u00a0has been assigned yet, click Add tag based rule<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

From the Categories<\/strong> drop-down menu, select the storage category previously created.<\/p>\n

Select the added category then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Next screen shows the resources that match the tag associated with the policy. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to complete the procedure.<\/p>\n

The new VM Storage Policy has been now created.<\/p>\n

Assign policies to virtual machines<\/h2>\n

To assign this policy to a virtual machine, right click the virtual machine and select All vCenter Actions > VM Storage Policies > Manage VM Storage Policies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From Home VM storage policy<\/strong> drop-down menu, select the storage policy created.<\/p>\n

Click Apply to disks<\/strong> button. The selected policy is shown in the VM Storage Policy<\/strong> field. Click OK<\/strong> to complete.<\/p>\n

Now verify the policy has been applied by checking the virtual machine Summary<\/strong>\u00a0view.<\/p>\n

While creating a new virtual machine, the VM can be placed to a specific storage<\/strong> using the VM Storage Policy and selecting the correct policy from the drop-down menu.<\/p>\n

The resources that match the selected policy will be shown as Compatible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
