Once vCenter Server has been updated successfully, next step is to upgrade ESXi 5.5 to 5.5 update 1 with vSphere Update Manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Previous post<\/a> described the procedure to upgrade vCenter Server. Now it's time to upgrade ESXi hosts using \u00a0vSphere Client b<\/span>ecause <\/span>VMware Update Manager is not yet fully integrated<\/strong> into vSphere Web Client.<\/span><\/p>\n

Upgrade VMware vSphere Client<\/h2>\n

Run\u00a0VMware vCenter Installer<\/strong>\u00a0to update VMware vSphere Client. Because an earlier release is installed on the computer, the system informs that an upgrade will be performed<\/strong>. Click Yes<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to start the installation wizard.<\/p>\n

Accept the EULA then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Install<\/strong> button to start the installation.<\/p>\n

The progressive bar shows the ongoing installation Status<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once installation has completed, click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

Upgrade vSphere Update Manager Plug-in<\/h2>\n

Using the updated vSphere Client, access vCenter Server to upgrade the vSphere Update Manager plug-in. From the menu click Plug-ins > Manage Plug-ins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Available Plug-ins, click Download and Install<\/strong> item in the Status column.<\/p>\n

Click Run<\/strong> to launch the installation.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to start the installation wizard.<\/p>\n

Accept the EULA then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Install<\/strong> to begin installation.<\/p>\n

The vSphere Update Manager plug-in is now enabled in the Installed Plug-ins<\/strong>\u00a0list.<\/p>\n

Upgrade ESXi hosts<\/h2>\n

Prior upgrading the ESXi hosts, take note of current release. In the example current version is 5.5.0\u00a0build number 1474528<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Stage patches<\/h4>\n

Select the cluster or host you want to update, then go to the Update Manager panel<\/strong>. Click Stage<\/strong> button to download updates directly to the selected hosts.<\/p>\n

Select Baselines<\/strong> to use and hosts<\/strong> to upgrade then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A list of available patches is shown. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Click Finish<\/strong> to start the process.<\/p>\n

Stage task start downloading patches<\/strong> to selected ESXi hosts.<\/p>\n

Remediate patches<\/h4>\n

Once Stage process has completed successfully, click Remediate<\/strong> button to perform hosts upgrade.<\/p>\n

Select hosts to upgrade then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Patches ready to install are listed in Patches and Extensions<\/strong> screen. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Type a Task Name and Description<\/strong> and specify the Remediation Time<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

Select options that best match your environment<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When ready to install, click Finish<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

You can follow the remediation process looking at the Recent Task<\/strong> view.<\/p>\n

During the remediation, hosts are rebooted.<\/p>\n

When the task completes, the ESXi hosts version change to 5.5.0\u00a0build number 1623387<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
