When Active Directory is used to manage users' authentication within the network, Zimbra Collaboration should be configured to use this mode<\/strong>\u00a0to keep the passwords in sync. The configuration can be done accessing the Admin Console via browser.<\/p>\n

Zimbra Collaboration suite<\/a>\u00a0is an open source solution for email, address book, calendar and tasks that can be accessed from a variety of standards-based email clients and mobile devices.<\/p>\n

Check Active Directory account<\/h2>\n

To properly configure the application, it's necessary to figure out\u00a0AD users to create\u00a0in the mail system accessing Active Directory User and Computer<\/strong>\u00a0MMC\u00a0snap-in.<\/p>\n

Right click the user to test with Zimbra then select Properties<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Note the User logon name<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Configure Zimbra authentication<\/h2>\n

To configure Zimbra authentication mode<\/strong>, access the Admin Console<\/strong> typing from the\u00a0browser the address https:\/\/IP_Address:7071<\/strong>. Insert Username<\/strong> and Password<\/strong> then click Sign In<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

Select Configure<\/strong> item in the left side of the window.<\/p>\n

Click Domains<\/strong> on the left side then right click the domain to configure and select Configure Authentication<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

Select External Active Directory<\/strong> option then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Type the AD domain name<\/strong> and insert the IP_address<\/strong> or FQDN<\/strong> of the Domain Controller specifying the LDAP Port<\/strong>. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Leave default. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Type the Username and Password of the Active Directory account<\/strong> to authenticate. Click Test<\/strong> button to verify\u00a0the account.<\/p>\n

If everything has been properly set, the account is authenticated successfully. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Leave default then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The configuration is complete. Click Finish<\/strong> to save changes.<\/p>\n

To synchronize Zimbra Collaboration with\u00a0Active Directory, same account name<\/strong> must be created in the Zimbra system. From Admin Console, Select Manage <\/strong>item in the left side of the window.<\/p>\n

Click Settings<\/strong> icon then select New<\/strong> to create a new account.<\/p>\n

Type same Account name<\/strong>\u00a0as set in the Active Directory and the used public domain.<\/p>\n

As you can recognize, no password field<\/strong> is present in the New Account options. This because the password is taken directly from the Active Directory. Click Finish<\/strong> to create the account.<\/p>\n

If you try changing the password of the created account, the Change Password<\/strong> option is grayed out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Test authentication<\/h2>\n

Open the browser and access Zimbra webmail by typing the server\u00a0IP_Address<\/strong> or the\u00a0DNS public name<\/strong> (i.e. mail.nolabnoparty.com). When Zimbra authentication screen appears, type Username<\/strong> and Password<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0the account just created then click Sign In<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

If the authentication succeeds, Zimbra user\u2019s webmail page opens. The used account has been authenticated directly<\/strong> from the Active Directory.<\/p>\n

Zimbra is now properly configured to authenticate users against Active Directory. If a company needs to implement Zimbra Collaboration as messaging software,\u00a0this task should be performed by IT professionals to achieve best results and ensure a proper support.<\/p>\n
