Veeam 7 SureBackup is a feature that runs some checks against backed up VMs inside an independent network (Virtual Lab) on a ESXi host to verify a successful backup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The verification doesn\u2019t have any impact in the production environment since the process runs in an isolated network<\/strong>. Checking backup images on regular basis helps administrators to prevent errors<\/strong> during the restore process in case of corrupted backups.<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/h2>\n

To create a SureBackup Job, three components<\/strong> need to be configured.<\/p>\n

  • Application Group<\/li>\n
  • SureBackup Job<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Add Virtual Lab<\/h2>\n

    First step is the\u00a0creation of the Virtual Lab to run the backups verification. Open Veeam Backup and Replication management console and access the Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> section. Right click the SureBackup<\/strong> item on the left side of the screen then select Add Virtual Lab<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

    Type a Name<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \"surebackup03\"<\/p>\n

    Select the host to run the Virtual Lab clicking the Choose<\/strong> button. Select desired host and click OK<\/strong> to confirm.<\/p>\n

    Click Configure<\/strong> button to specify Destination Options<\/strong> then click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click Choose<\/strong> button to select Datastore<\/strong> used by the Virtual Lab during the backup verification. Click OK <\/strong>to confirm the selection.<\/p>\n

    The Datastore info<\/strong> are displayed. Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Click Configure<\/strong> button to specify custom Network Settings<\/strong> of the Virtual Lab appliance. If a DHCP<\/strong> is configured in the network, you can leave default values (Obtain automatically<\/strong>). Click OK<\/strong> to save settings.<\/p>\n

    Click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Depending on the available infrastructure, you can specify how virtual machines are connected to the network. Select Advanced single-host (manual configuration)<\/strong> option then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    If only one isolated network is used, leave default and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Specify the network parameters<\/strong> isolated networks will use to connect the Virtual Lab appliance.<\/p>\n

    When parameters have been specified, click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Leave default and click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click Next<\/strong> to apply the configuration.<\/p>\n

    When the new Virtual Lab has been configured click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

    Looking at the VMware vCenter Server, you can notice a new Resource Pool and the Veeam appliance<\/strong> have been created.<\/p>\n

    Add App Group<\/h2>\n

    From the Backup Infrastructure<\/strong> section, right click SureBackup<\/strong> item and select Add App Group <\/strong>option.<\/p>\n

    Type a Name<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \"surebackup19\"<\/p>\n

    Click Add Backup<\/strong> button to select VMs<\/p>\n

    \"surebackup20\"<\/p>\n

    Select the VM to specify Roles<\/strong> then click Edit<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

    Select the Roles<\/strong> to assign. In this example the selected VM is a Domain Controller.<\/p>\n

    Select Startup Options<\/strong> tab to modify\u00a0default settings. Leave default.<\/p>\n

    Select Test Scripts<\/strong> tab to add specific scripts for the selected VMs. Click OK<\/strong> to close the window.<\/p>\n

    Once Roles have been assigned, click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

    Add SureBackup job<\/h2>\n

    As soon as both Virtual Lab and Application Groups have been created, it\u2019s time to configure the SureBackup job. Click Add SureBackup Job<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

    Type a Name<\/strong> then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \"surebackup28\"<\/p>\n

    Select the Virtual Lab<\/strong> to run the job then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Select Application Group<\/strong> for the job. Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click Add<\/strong> button to select the jobs to link<\/strong> to the SureBackup job.<\/p>\n

    When the Linked jobs have been set, click Next<\/strong> to continue. You can also set how many VMs should be processed simultaneously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    To test just the selected VM instead, leave Link jobs blank<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n

    Optionally set the Job Results<\/strong> notifications then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Specify scheduling settings then click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click Finish<\/strong> to exit the wizard.<\/p>\n

    Run SureBackup job<\/h2>\n

    Once the required components have been created, it\u2019s time to run the just configured SureBackup job. In Backup & Replication<\/strong> section select SureBackup<\/strong> item, right click the SureBackup job name and select the Start<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

    The job starts powering on the Virtual Lab appliance<\/strong> then the selected VM is processed.<\/p>\n

    In the vCenter Server, the Virtual Lab appliance and the selected virtual machines are powered on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    When the procedure completes, you can check if the verification was successful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    If the email notification has been configured, you will receive in your inbox the SureBackup job report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Once again, backups are the only way to restore data in case of a disaster and administrators should guarantee the integrity of backup images to prevent errors<\/strong> during restore due to corrupted backups.<\/p>\n
