To perform the VMware Backup using the Vembu BDRSuite 5.6 backup solution is an easy task and requires only few minutes to be configured properly.
Before proceeding with the VMware Backup configuration, make sure you have Vembu BDRSuite 5.6 up and running with the correct license.
Once the Vembu BDRSuite installation has been completed, there are some additional steps to do to configure the software to perform the correct VMware Backup.
Login to Vembu BDRSuite by entering the correct Username and Password. Click Sign In.
Configure the Backup Repository
First step is the creation of the Backup Repository to store the VMware Backup.
From the dashboard, click Create New Block Storage Repository.
Specify the Repository Name, Repository Type then click Add Network Drive as Storage Volume to add the correct repository.
Thick the warning checkbox then enter Drive Path, Display Drive Name and the credentials to connect. Click Save when done.
Select the just configured Backup Repository and click Create.
Click Confirm to proceed.

Add the vCenter Server
Adding the vCenter Server or the ESXi host to Vembu BDRSuite is the next operation to do. This allow to retrieve the VMs to protect from your VMware environment.
From Vembu BDRSuite's main dashboard, select Data Source >Add VMware vSphere > ESXi & vCenter.
Click Add ESXi/vCenter Server button.
Enter the ESXi Server Name / IP Address of the vCenter Server / ESXi host to add. If you don't have any saved Credential, click Add Credential to create one.
Enter the Credential Name, Username and Password then click Save.
Leave the default Port Number and click Save.
The vCenter Server has been added successfully.
Configure the VMware Backup Job
Once the Backup Repository and the vCenter Server have been configured, is now time to configure the VMware Backup Job to protect the desired VMs.
Form the main dashboard, select Configure Backup > Configure Backup > VMware vSphere.
If you don't have any existing Template, select Create Job without using a Template option and enter the Backup Job Name to configure. Specify the Backup Repository type and the Repository Name. Optionally add a Job Description then click Next.
Select the VMs to protect and click Next.
If you need to exclude one or more disks from the backup, select the VM to process from the Disk Exclusion tab and click Exclude Disk(s) button. Select Exclude the following selected Disks from backup option and select the disks to exclude then click Apply.
Make sure that all required VMs with the excluded disk have been configured then click Next to continue.
To ensure consistent backups for the supported applications, in the Guest Processing Settings tab select the VM to process and click Edit Guest Processing Settings.
Specify the desired options and click Apply.
The settings configured are displayed next to the VM Name.
In the Guest Credentials section you need to specify the credential used by Vembu BDRSuite to process the VM. Select the VM to process and click Apply credential to set the correct credentials to use during the application-aware processing.
In the VMware Quiescing section, leave default settings to ensure consistency for your backups. Click Next.
Specify the desired Schedule for the VMware Backup Job and click Next.
Specify the Retention for the Backup Job. Enable the Retention for incremental backup switch to set the number of restore points to retain (by default all restore points are retained).
In the Encryption section you can activate the encryption for the backup by switching the selector to Enabled and by entering a Password.
If any Backup Proxy is configured in the infrastructure, specify the Proxy to use in the Advanced Settings section. Click Next.
Review the Backup configuration and click Save to save the configuration.
Click Save to confirm.

Test the Backup Job
To test the VMware Backup Job without waiting for the scheduled time, click on the run icon to run the backup immediately.
Select Incremental Backup and specify All Hosts/VMs. Click Yes, Schedule Now to proceed.
The backup starts and the Status is reported as In Progress.
Depending on the size of the VMs to protect, after a few minutes the backup completes successfully.
Click the report icon to view the VMware Backup Job report. The selected VMs have been backed up successfully.
