Nakivo released the beta of the upcoming new Nakivo Backup & Replication v10.4 introducing two main features such as the Immutable Repository and 2FA authentication.
The number of ransomware attacks increased dramatically over the last years causing lot of troubles to businesses not ready to protect their backups ensuring data availability and integrity.
Concept introduced already in Nakivo Backup & Replication 10.2 where backup copies stored on AWS S3 can be protected leveraging the Object Lock feature provided by AWS S3 buckets, an Immutable Repository can be deployed on-premises providing same layer of protection against overwriting, deletion and modification.
Immutable Repository
To protect backup files against ransomware attacks, there is only one efficient way to achieve that goal: making backups immutable. Immutability is a feature that provides protection to files against overwriting, deletion and modification stored on the repository. Once the immutable period (retention) has been set, nobody can alter the backup files except superuser accounts.
Immutability is set during the creation of the backup job and can be enabled for backups and backup copies sent to a Linux-based local repository.
Two-factor authentication (2FA)
To prevent unauthorized accesses to Nakivo Backup & Replication's console, the two-factor authentication (2FA) feature has been introduced in version 10.4. When enabled, after entering the password, an extra code generated by Google Authenticator must be provided to allow the users to log in.
The configuration of 2FA is set in the GUI when configuring a user account and the following requirements must be met:
- An email configuration must be defined in the appliance settings.
- When the email has been set, the two-factor authentication can be enabled for the user (if the email is not configured, the checkbox is greyed out).
- Install Google Authenticator to generate the codes.
Activated the 2FA feature, when you try to login an authentication code must be now provided to complete the authentication procedure.
