Once the StarWind VTL Linux appliance is deployed, the next step is to configure the storage pool and volumes to complete the setup.

Make sure that the deployment was completed with no errors.

Configure the StarWind VTL Linux

Access the StarWind VTL Linux by entering the previously configured credentials. Click Sign in.

From the main Dashboard go to Storage > Physical disks. The system displays the available installed disk.

Add a new disk

New disks can be added to StarWind VTL Linux. From the vSphere Client, add a new disk.

In section Storage > Physical disks, click Rescan.

After few seconds, the added disk is detected.

Create  a storage pool

Go to Storage pools section and click the +(plus) icon.

Click Next.

Select the disks to include in the storage pool. Click Next.

Select one of the profiles available that best meet the requirements and click Next. Based on the disk types installed, the profiles displayed in StarWind VTL Linux may be different.

If you want to customize the used profile, select Manual.

The Manual configuration allows to customize the storage pool type and layout.

Click Create to create the chosen storage pool profile.

Create a volume

Go to Volumes section and click the +(plus) icon.

Select the storage pool to create a volume and click Next.

Specify the volume Name and desired Size. Click Next.

Select the Standard filesystem to use (only licensed filesystems can be selected) and click Next.

Click Create.

Networking

As best practice, StarWind VTL Linux recommend a NIC dedicated for management and one for data. This step can also be done during the initial deployment of the appliance.

If the appliance still has a single NIC configured, add a new NIC from the vSphere Client.

In the Network section, the system detects the new added NIC. Select the new NIC and click the pencil icon to edit.

Specify Data as Role and configure the network settings. Click Save when done.

The added NIC is now configured.

Install updates

From the main Dashboard click the gear icon.

Go to Software update tab. If an update is available, click Install update.

When the installation is completed, click Go to the Login page.

Login to the appliance and check the installed version.

Install the StarWind Management Console

To install the required console to create the StarWind VTL device, go to Settings > Downloads and click Download console.

Install the console on the same server where your backup solution is installed or in another Windows machine. Double click the .exe file to begin the installation. Click Next.

Leave default location and click Next.

Select StarWind Management Console from the drop-down menu. Click Next.

Click Next.

Click Next.

Click Install.

When the installation is completed successfully, click Finish.
