To directly upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication to latest version 9.5, you must be running version 9.0 (any update) or 8.0 Update 3.
Before proceeding with the upgrade, you should verify the following checklist to avoid possible issues:
- Ensure there is no active processes (running jobs and restore sessions) and disable any periodic jobs and backup copy jobs. Let running jobs complete successfully before proceed.
- If Veeam ONE is used to monitor your backup infrastructure, upgrade this component first.
- If Cloud Connect feature is used, check with the Cloud Connect service provider if their system have already upgraded.
- If Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager has been configured in your infrastructure, start the upgrade procedure from this component.
- Make sure to have a working backup of the SQL Server configuration databases used by backup and Enterprise Manager servers to restore previous version in case of issues with upgrade.
Upgrade Veeam Server
To perform the upgrade, download the ISO image from Veeam website and run the setup.
First component to upgrade is the Backup Server. From the installation wizard click Upgrade to begin the installation.
Accept the EULA and click Next.
The system detects previous installed version. Click Install to proceed with the upgrade.
If you don't have any, click Browse to install a working licence then click Next.
If the computer doesn't meet minimum requirements, click Install to deploy missing features.
The installation procedure enables missing features.
When the requirements are met, click Next to continue.
Since best practices recommend the use of a dedicated service account, select The following user account option and enter the credentials for the service account. Click Next.
Select Use existing instance of SQL Server to retain the Veeam database configuration. Click Next.
Click Yes to confirm the database upgrade.
If you use Cloud Connect but your service provider didn't upgrade their system yet, the wizard displays a warning message. In this case, it is recommended to delay the Veeam upgrade to avoid the interruption of the cloud targets services.
Click Install to begin the installation.
Veeam Server is being upgraded.
When the installation completes successfully, click Finish to exit the wizard.
Click Yes to restart the system.
After rebooting the server, run the console and click Connect to access Veeam Backup and Replication.
The initial screen displays the current installed version 9.5.
First time you access the Veeam Server, the installed components of the backup infrastructure must be updated. Note that Cloud Connect components are also update in this step. Click Next to proceed.
Selected components are updated.
When the process has been completed, click Finish.
Veeam Server upgrade process is now complete.
Upgrade the console
Run the Veeam console installed in the administrators' computers and try to connect the Backup Server.
Since the used console has an old version, the system is not able to connect the Veeam Server 9.5. To upgrade the console to latest version you have to manually run the setup.
Mount the Veeam ISO file and run the setup. Click Veeam Backup & Replication Console Upgrade option to proceed.
Accept the EULA and click Next.
The system detects a previous installed version. Click Next to proceed with the upgrade.
If the computer doesn't meet the requirements, click Install to deploy missing features.
Missing features are enabled.
When missing features have been installed, click Next to continue with the console upgrade.
Click Install to begin installation.
The console is being upgraded.
When the procedure has been completed, click Finish to exit the wizard.
The console has been updated successfully and can now connect the Veeam Backup Server.
The upgrade process is now complete. Enable any periodic jobs and backup copy jobs configured in the system in order to restore the expected scheduling.
