Altaro Office 365 Backup: configuration - pt.1


To protect your Office 365 environment, Altaro Office 365 Backup is the solution provided by Altaro to protect and avoid data loss of your Office 365.

The Altaro solution doesn't require any deployment and everything is managed from an online dashboard. Office 365 mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams data are backed up and securely stored on Altaro data centers.

Why Office 365 data should be backed up

You must be aware that Office 365 doesn't provide data protection services and Microsoft responsibility is only limited to keep the infrastructure healthy.

Accidental or malicious deletion, malware or ransomware, and system or human errors can cause data loss in your Office 365 environment and an efficient backup solution is then required to protect your data.


Altaro Office 365 Backup features

  • Business Basic, Standard and Premium

  • Backup of user and group mailboxes (mail, attachments, calendars and contacts)
  • Backup OneDrive and SharePoint
  • Backup user chats and Teams channel conversations (files, attachments shared over Teams, Meetings, and Meeting recordings)
  • Auto creation of backup jobs with low RPO
  • Automated backups (up to 4 times a day)



  • Restore full mailboxes or granularly restore mailbox emails (user and group)
  • Items can be restored to original or different mailbox
  • Restore OneDrive and SharePoint files to a OneDrive account or a SharePoint Document Library
  • Restore user chats or Teams channel conversations
  • Export emails to ZIP or PST, files to ZIP
  • Export Teams chats and conversations to a HTML chat thread

It is required a minimum starting subscription that includes up to 10 users per year. Volume discounts apply.


Configure Altaro Office 365 Backup

To take advantage of Altaro Office 365 Backup, nothing has to be installed on-premises and the overall configuration takes place in the Altaro Cloud Management Console (CMC).

To proceed with the configuration, login to the Altaro CMC. Enter your credentials and click Sign In.


From the console, click on Altaro Office 365 Backup link to access the configuration page.


Check both options and click I Accept to accept the EULA.


Before running the backup, you need to configure your Organization in the Altaro CMC. Click Link your first Office 365 Organization to the portal.



Step 1 - Add an Office 365 Organization

From the Select a Cloud Storage region drop-down menu select the desired region. Enter your Office 365 Organization Company Name and the Office 365 Organization. Click Next.



Step 2 - Grant access

To backup your Office 365 objects you need to grant Altaro the required permissions for the applications to protect. Click option Click Here to allow Altaro to revoke access to Altaro applications in the future.


Specify the Office 365 Administrator for your tenant and click Next.


Enter the password and click Sign in.


Click Accept to grant the specified permissions.


Permissions have been granted to Altaro. Click Close.


Now click on the option Click here to grant temporary access to create new applications.


Select the Office 365 Administrator for your tenant.


Click Accept to grant the specified permissions.


Permissions have been granted to Altaro successfully. Click Close.


Click on the option Click here to grant access to back up and restore Office 365 data.


Select the Office 365 Administrator for your tenant.


Click Accept to grant the specified permissions.


Permissions have been granted to Altaro successfully. Click Close.


Click on the option Click here to allow Altaro to back up Teams Chats.


Again, select the Office 365 Administrator for your tenant.


Click Accept to grant the specified permissions.


Permissions have been granted to Altaro successfully. Click Close.


Step 2 has been completed. Click Next to continue the configuration.



Step 3 - Choose Users to Back Up

By default the Back Up all Users option is selected but you can specify the users to backup or configure this option later.


To backup only specific users, choose Select Users to Back Up option. Select users to backup then click Next.



Step 4 - Groups and SharePoint Files

Again, you can specify if you want to backup everything or specific objects only. Leave default Back Up all Groups & Document Libraries option and click Next.



Step 5 - Summary

Click Finish to save the configuration.


After few seconds, the configured Organization is displayed in the console.


Altaro Office 365 Backup is now configured and ready to backup your Office 365 environment.
