Once Veeam Backup & Replication has been installed, we must create Veeam backup job to protect the business data and the virtual infrastructure.
Of course the backup strategy should be planned accordingly in order to satisfy the real business needs.
Create backup job
From main screen select Backup then click Home > Backup Job to create a new Backup Job.
Type a Name and a Description then click Next.
Through the Add button, add the virtual machines to backup. Click Next.
Select the Backup repository to use.
Click the Advanced button to access the Advanced Settings. The backup mode depends on your backup strategy. Can be Reversed incremental (recommended for backup to disk) or Incremental (recommended for backup to tape, remote site). In the example the Reversed incremental is used setting an Active full backup on First Sunday every two Months.
In the Storage optimizations field set the value to LAN target if a NAS storage is used as backup repository.
To receive an automatic notification when backup completes, enable Send email notification to the following recipients field. To send email you need also to set parameters in Option > E-Mail Settings.
Check Enable VMware Tools quiescence.
Leave default settings or adjust values in order to match your network policies.
This feature is available only with Enterprise Plus edition. Click OK to save the configuration.
Enable Microsoft VSS and system indexing options. Select default Guest OS credentials used by virtual machines. Click Advanced to access additional options.
If a virtual machine uses a different account, click Set User button and specify the correct credentials. Click OK when done.
Click Edit button and access Applications panel. Set Microsoft VSS and Transaction log behavior options.
Access the Indexing panel and set what has to be indexed. Click OK to save the configuration.
When the setup is complete, the parameters set are shown in the Guest processing Settings window. Click OK to confirm.
Specify the Schedule for the backup job. Click Window button to specify the time periods available to run the backup.
Enable/Disable the Time Periods for executing the backup job then click OK.
When setup is complete, click Finish to save the job.
Test the backup
To test the backup just created, right click the backup job then select Start.
The backup process start showing the status details.
When the backup completes, the job summary is shown and, if enabled, the notification email is sent to the specified recipient.
Restore a virtual machine
To restore a virtual machine select Backup & Replication > Backups > Disk, select the virtual machine then click Restore.
You can insert additional virtual machine to restore. When done click Next.
Select the restore option requested then click Next.
Type a Restore reason just for later reference. Click Next.
A Summary window is shown. To start the restore process click Finish.
The restore process starts showing the details and status of the virtual machines involved.
Depending on the network infrastructure, different configurations can be set in Veeam Backup to give maximum flexibility and protection to the business data.
