The Veeam Backup and Replication 7 upgrade procedure to version 8 is pretty simple and allows the administrators to take advantage of new features.
Before proceeding with the upgrade, two main keynotes should be kept in mind:
- Upgrade to version 8.0 is supported for Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 and 7.0.
- Once the database has been updated to the new release, earlier Veeam installation won't be able to access it. A DB backup is strongly recommended prior upgrading.
Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication
Download Availability Suite v8 from Veeam website and run the installer.
Since the installation wizard detects an existing Veeam installation in the system, the upgrade option is shown. In this example, Backup Enterprise Manager doesn't have the upgrade option since it is not installed in the system, otherwise it should be upgraded first.
Click upgrade to start the wizard.
The installation wizard starts. Click Next to proceed.
Accept the EULA then click Next.
Previous Veeam components installed on the computer are detected. Click Next to start the upgrade process.
Click Browse to select the license file to use then click Next. Leaving the field blank, the application will operate in Free Edition mode.
The wizard checks the system for potential installation problems. If the Status shows the green icon Passed, click Next to continue.
Type the service account name and password used to run Veeam then click Next.
Specify the existing SQL instance used by the current Veeam installation then click Next.
Since the database is already configured in the system, the setup will upgrade the DB to the version you are installing. Click Yes to confirm.
The wizard is ready to begin the installation. Click the Install button to proceed.
The application is being installed in the system.
Once the installation completes, click Finish to exit the wizard.
Click Yes to restart the system to activate the changes made.
After rebooting the server, run Veeam Backup & Replication 8.
Due to the release upgrade, also some product's components need to be updated. Click Next to proceed.
The components are being updated.
After few seconds, the components upgrade completes. Click Finish to exit Component Update screen.
Veeam Backup & Replication 8 main screen is shown. You can recognize that previously configured backup and replication jobs are kept.
Backup Enterprise Manager
To keep the web access feature enabled, the Backup Enterprise Manager should be upgraded as well. Since the application is not installed in my lab, the upgrade option is not shown. This is the first component to upgrade before Backup & Replication.
Run the installer and click install.
The setup wizard starts. Click Next to proceed.
Accept the EULA then click Next.
Since the license is already installed, click Next to continue.
Click Next to install the selected feature.
If during the installation process some requirements are not installed, click Install button to deploy missing features.
The installation wizard installs required features.
When all features have been installed and the Status column reports a green icon Passed, click Next to continue the installation.
The configuration summary is shown. Click Install to perform the installation.
The application is being installed.
When completed, click Finish to exit the wizard.
From your browser access the Backup Enterprise Manager web page typing the address:
https://server_IP_address_or_FQDN:9443
Type username and password then click Login button.
Main Backup Enterprise Manager screen is shown.
The upgrade process is now complete. You can start configuring backup and replication jobs using the new features introduced in this release.
